Ashland Clips Marauders for Second Time

Box Score

Ashland, Ohio - Millersville's road woes continue. For the third time in as many games away from Pucillo Gymnasium, the Marauders lost, falling at Ashland Thursday, 76-69.

Ashland (5-5) has now handed Millersville (3-4) two of its four losses this year, and both games were decided by a narrow margin. On Nov. 20, Ashland used a late score to win 64-60, and on Thursday, it was the Eagles' lights-out shooting in the second half. In the final 20 minutes, Ashland drilled 15-of-24 shots from the field and 5-of-9 from 3-point range to hang on to the lead.

By connecting on 51.1 percent of its shots in the game, Ashland became just the second team this season to hit better than 50 percent of its shots against the Marauders. Millersville has allowed 74.3 points per game and 48.5 percent shooting in its three road games compared to 58.2 points and 35.5 percent shooting allowed at home.

Junior Demond Vance, who scored 15 of his team-high 18 points in the first half, kept the Marauders close. He scored exactly half of Millersville's first period point total, but Ashland still managed to hold a 34-30 lead at the break.

Ashland started quickly in the second, hitting its first three shots--two of which were threes--to build a 10 point lead. Coach Fred Thompson called a timeout, and the Marauders responded with a 7-3 run of their own. Mike Seibert's only 3-pointer of the game pulled Millersville to 45-42 with 15:21 to play.

The two clubs traded 3-pointers, and Bernard Brown scored for two to cut the lead to two points, but the Marauders would never be able to tie or take the lead away from Ashland over the final 13:26. Trailing 59-56 with 10:10 to go, Millersville went ice cold. It missed five of its next six shots and fell behind by 15 points.

Jim Kelleher came off the bench to score nine late points in seven minutes, but the defecit was too much to overcome. Bernard Brown totaled 11 rebounds, eight points and three steals. Mike Holley scored 13 and Jaymes Miller added 10.

Millersville's margin of defeat has been just 6.0 points per game. The struggles on the road will need to be quickly corrected as Millersville travels to Gannon and Clarion on Jan. 3-4 for a pair of PSAC Crossover contests.
