Rams Fend Off Marauder Rally, 67-64

Box Score

Philadelphia, Pa. - Homestanding Philadelphia led Millersville by as many as 14 points in the second half of Sunday's non-conference tilt, but the Marauders cut that lead to one point with two seconds remaining. Philadelphia, however, was able to seal its 67-64 win with a pair of Jimmy Connolly free throws.

It was fitting that Connolly put the finishing touches on Philadelphia's (3-3) win. He carried the Rams throughout the game and helped them erase an early 11-point Marauder lead by scoring a game-high 27 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field and 8-of-9 shooting from the free throw line. His Millersville (1-2) counterpart--freshman Mike Holley--was impressive again, dropping a season-high 26 points, handing out three assists and recording three steals while not committing a turnover. Holley has led Millersville in scoring in all three games this year.

Millersville shot 39.6 percent from the field and 5-of-21 from 3-point range, but in the game's first four minutes, the Marauders were as hot as could be. They made four of their first five shots including a pair of 3-pointers from junior Mike Seibert to built a 12-1 advantage.

The lead didn't stand for long, though. By the 11:03 mark of the first half, the Rams had completely erased the Marauder advantage, and with a 13-0 run, they and took a five-point lead until Jim Kelleher made his first and only 3-pointer of the game.

The Rams' lead continued to grow, moving to 10 points on a Connolly free throw just before the break. Connolly struck again at the 11:51 mark of the second period, scoring for two to give the Rams' their largest lead of the game at 50-36.

With 10:04 left, Millersville turned its defense into offense. Holley scored on a lay-up to start the run, and Millersville used three steals and a blocked shot in a 9-0 run.

Millersville kept Philadelphia within two possessions over the final seven minutes, but trailed by five after Connolly sank two free throws with 22 ticks on the clock. Seibert couldn't connect on a 3-pointer, but Philadelphia's Corey Francisco missed two free throws to give the Marauders life. Rob Wyley scored off a Holley assist with four seconds to go to make the deficit 65-62. On the ensuing in-bounds pass, Connolly booted the ball out of bounds, giving Millersville the ball underneath its own hoop with a chance to tie.

The pass entered to Kelleher, but he was quickly fouled to prevent a 3-point attempt. Kelleher made both foul shots, but Millersville was forced to send Connolly to the line with under one second left, and he drilled both for the win.

The Rams shot 51.1 percent from the field including an impressive 12-of-20 in the second half. Only six Rams played in the game, and Ola Sasona and Nick Christian joined Connolly in double figures.

For Millersville, Seibert added 12 points on three 3-pointers and 3-of-3 shooting from the line. Holley hit 11-of-12 from the stripe as the Marauders knocked down 17-of-23 as a team. Rob Wyley pulled down nine rebounds and blocked two shots.

Millersville fell to 1-9 all-time against the Rams. The Marauders will try to even their season record on Dec. 4 against Lincoln.
