Millersville, Pa. – It took double overtime to decide the Marauders' playoff fate. The Millersville men's soccer team headed into this afternoon's game needing at least a tie to clinch a spot in the PSAC Tournament. The Marauders scored early and controlled most of the game until the Golden Rams found a break-away goal with less than 10 minutes to play to take it to overtime. Neither team was able to find the game winner, but Millersville received the one point it needed.
The point gave Millersville (11-4-2, 5-3-1 PSAC) 16 to close out the regular season and it was enough to earn its fourth-straight bid to the playoffs. The Marauders out-shot West Chester (6-9-2, 1-6-2 PSAC) in regulation 23-11 and in overtime 6-1. Millersville put a defensive stranglehold on the Ram for the first 81 minutes of play.
Senior Kyle Loughlin scored the lone goal for the Marauders on what was his last regular season game at Chryst Field during Senior Day. It came in the 13th minute when Matt Kadoch lobbed the ball into the box to Andrew Dukes who headed it over to Loughlin who gathered it and scored to put Millersville in front, 1-0.
It was a defensive battle the rest of the game until West Chester found its equalizer in the 82nd minute. Conor Malarney found himself all alone with Marauder keeper Matt Langione. Malarney shot the ball from 15 yards out, lofting the ball over Langione's head to knot the game at 1-1.
Neither team could find a game winner in the two overtime sessions. Millersville had the advantage firing six shots to just one by the Rams.
It was the final regular season home game for seven Marauder seniors. With 58 victories, it is the winningest class in school history and it has been a part of two NCAA Tournament appearances and two PSAC Championship game appearances to date.
Millersville will be the No. 3 seed in the tournament and will travel to East Stroudsburg for the semifinal on Wednesday, Nov. 3. Game time is 6 p.m. ESU edged Millersville 3-2 in double overtime earlier this season.
