ABOUT THE GAME
• Millersville and East Stroudsburg clash on Homecoming Saturday and both are looking to end a multi-game skid. Both squads are also searching for a PSAC East victory.
• Millersville nearly knocked off No. 23 Kutztown last week, falling 38-28. Wide receiver
Jamal Smith produced another outstanding game, totaling 192 yards receiving and two touchdowns. He enters this week's game as the PSAC leader in catches, receiving yards and touchdown catches. East Stroudsburg also has an outstanding offensive weapon in quarterback Matt Marshall. He's second in the PSAC in passing yards and touchdowns.
• Saturday is also Millersville's annual Homecoming game and Senior Day for 14 seniors. Millersville topped Kutztown 41-35 in overtime in last year's Homecoming game. Millersville is 21-17-1 in Homecoming games dating back to 1968. Last year's victory ended a three-game losing streak in such games. After starting the season with five-straight home games, Saturday's game is the home finale for the Marauders. They will close the year with three in a row on the road.
• Audio can be heard on the home of Millersville Athletics, the Marauder Sports Broadcasting Network (MSBN). The broadcast, featuring play-by-play announcer Domenic Panza, can be accessed at www.millersvilleathletics.com.
• Millersville and East Stroudsburg are similar teams. Both boast strong passing attacks but struggle with running the football effectively. Both teams have also struggled on defense. ESU ranks 12th in the PSAC in total defense, allowing 362.9 yards per game. Millersville is 16th, allowing 414.7 yards per game.
• Fans can expect a high scoring game as Millersville has scored at least 28 points four times this year. East Stroudsburg is averaging nearly 27 points per game as well. ESU's passing game is ranked third in the league and Millersville's is fourth. Both teams are averaging more than 250 yards per game through the air. At 104.4 rushing yards per game, East Stroudsburg is 14th in the PSAC in rushing offense. Millersville averages just 75.9 rushing yards per game and is 15th in the league.
• Injuries have also hampered the team's efforts. Leading tackler
Pat Maloney, leading rusher
Mike Jones both missed extended time. The Marauders also lost starting center
Don Houck for the remainder of the season to a torn ACL and fellow lineman
Mike Unick will likely miss several games with a shoulder injury.
ABOUT THE SERIES
• East Stroudsburg holds a slight 36-24-1 edge in the all-time series that dates back to 1948. ESU won the first four meetings and 20 of the first 24. Millersville dominated the series from 1984-2000, posting a 14-2-1 record. ESU has turned the tables in recent years, winning eight of the last nine meetings. Millersville's last win came by a 36-24 score during the 2007 season.
• East Stroudsburg has averaged 44.5 points in the last two games. In 2009, Matt Marshall threw for three touchdowns for the Warriors, led a 23-point second quarter outburst en route to a 44-3 win.
THE HEAD COACHES
• Millersville's Greg Colby is in his third season as head coach. He inherited a youthful roster and a program that hadn't posted a winning season since 2000. He spent most of his career as an assistant at the Division I level, though. From 1979-86, he was the head coach at Schlarman High School and Naperville High School in Illinois. While at Schlarman, Colby led the team to back-to-back Illinois High School 2-A State Championships (1981-82).
• Colby has an impressive resume. He came to Millersville after serving as the defensive coordinator at Northwestern from 2002-07 during which time the Wildcats posted three-straight six-win seasons for the first time in 70 years. He was also the defensive coordinator at Kent State for four seasons and served as a defensive assistant at Michigan State under Nick Saban and at Illinois under Lou Tepper.
• East Stroudsburg head coach Denny Douds is in his 37th season and is one of just four active coaches in Division II and one of 11 overall with 200 career victories. He has captured nine PSAC East titles and has also taken the Warriors to the NCAA Playoffs four times and three times since 2004. He is the PSAC's longest-tenured coach.
• Douds has won PSAC East Coach of the Year honors three times since 1976. He was a standout lineman for Slippery Rock during his playing days and is now a member of four hall of fames: East Stroudsburg, Slippery Rock, Indiana County and Northeast Pennsylvania.
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS
• One year after an 8-4 record and an NCAA Division II Playoff Appearance, East Stroudsburg has struggled to a 1-6 start and is winless in the PSAC East. The Warriors entered the season ranked in the AFCA and d2football.com polls but are mired in just the fourth six-game losing streak in school history. Since trouncing Pace by 57 points in the season opener, the Warriors have dropped six in a row. The record is deceiving, though, as East Stroudsburg has been in almost every game to the finish. Four of the six losses have been by nine points of less, and the Warriors have the 10th toughest schedule in Division II.
• Quarterback Matt Marshall is among the most prolific in the PSAC. He leads the league's sixth-best offense and third-ranked passing attack. His accuracy is a strength as he has completed 61.3 percent of his passes. He is also second in the PSAC with 18 touchdowns.
• Seven players have at least 10 catches and four have at least 200 yards receiving.
• Linebacker Matt Freed was an All-American last year and currently ranks second in the PSAC with 10.6 tackles per game.
THE LAST TIME OUT
•
Jamal Smith put on a show, totaling 192 receiving yards and scoring two touchdowns from 78 and 53 yards, but his exploits couldn't overcome the potent offense of No. 23 Kutztown. The Golden Bears thrilled its Homecoming crowd with a 38-28 win and the first 7-0 start in school history.
• Kutztown (7-0, 4-0 PSAC East) continued its season as the surprise of the PSAC Eastern Division. Led by Kevin Morton's 350 yards passing and four touchdowns, the Golden Bears racked up 496 yards of total offense and overwhelmed the Millersville defense late in the fourth quarter when the game still hung in the balance.
• Millersville (2-5, 0-4 PSAC East), losers of four in a row, trailed by just seven at the half and limited Kutztown to only one score in the third quarter. The touchdown—a Morton strike to Erik Frazier—came on the team's first possession of the half, but the Marauder defense held the Golden Bears to four yards and forced two punts the rest of the quarter.
• The Marauders, however, could not take advantage of its defense's play. The Millersville offense penetrated Kutztown's 6-yard line on its first drive of the third but bogged down immediately and settled for an
Anthony Kassab field goal—his second of the day. Millersville's next two possessions, both of which could have closed the gap to one score, ended in punts.
• Kutztown appeared to put the game out of reach when Kendell Coleman finished a seven-play, 85-yard touchdown drive to start the fourth quarter.
Bill Shirk, however, captained a quick-strike drive that ended when Smith hauled in a fourth-and-three pass and turned it into a 53-yard touchdown.
• Still with 7:40 left in the game, Millersville elected for an onside kick, but Kutztown managed to recover. Using its excellent field position, Kutztown drove 43 yards and boosted its lead to 38-21 on another Frazier touchdown catch.
• Millersville didn't go away, though. Shirk found Smith twice and rushed six times including a six-yard touchdown run with 1:58 on the clock. Kassab's onside kick was again recovered by Kutztown, and the Golden Bears managed to run out the clock, securing their unblemished record.
• Smith's nine catches matched a career high and his two scores moved his career total to 21, placing him one behind Kevin Cannon for third in Millersville history. Smith gave Millersville a 7-0 lead just 56 seconds into the game on a 78-yard touchdown catch. It was his longest reception of the season and the second-longest of his career. He has four touchdown catches of at least 50 yards this year.
• Millersville could hardly afford any miscues, and it missed a golden opportunity 33 yards to the Kutztown 9-yard line. However, Shirk missed on two passes and Kassab missed a 23-yard attempt after hitting a 40-yard field goal earlier in the quarter. Kutztown made the Marauders pay by scoring a touchdown on its very next drive to take a 14-10 lead.
• Shirk finished the game with 235 yards on 17-of-32 passing. He also totaled 50 yards rushing on 14 carries.
Fateen Brown rushed for a career-high 53 yards on 13 carries.
TAKE IT BACK
•
Jamal Smith returned a kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter against C.W. Post on Oct. 9. It was Millersville's first kickoff return since
Brad Lantz in 2007 and it was the first of Smith's career. He now has scored a touchdown four different ways: rushing, receiving, passing and kickoff return.
PRODUCING POINTS
•
Bill Shirk threw four touchdown passes against Lock Haven, marking the second time in his career and the second time in his last seven games that he has thrown four TD passes. He also hit
Jamal Smith for four TD's against Kutztown on Oct. 24, 2009. Shirk has now thrown two or more touchdown passes in a game 10 times in his career. Shirk threw three touchdown passes in the opener against Assumption and three more against Gannon in week three. It was the sixth time in his career that he has thrown at least three TD passes in one game. He accomplished the feat twice in each of his first two seasons. He also threw for three scores in back-to-back games in October of 2008.
• With 15 passing touchdowns and three rushing touchdown, Shirk is fourth in the PSAC in touchdown passes and he is 18th in Division II in points responsible for.
MILLERSVILLE PICKERS
• Millersville has totaled eight interceptions through seven games.
Matt Sutjak leads the team with three interceptions, and the Marauders totaled four interceptions against Lock Haven. The defense picked off Gannon twice. After
John Wynder's interception at Kutztown, Millersville ranks sixth in the PSAC in interceptions.
• Sutjak's two picks against Lock Haven were a career-high and the four were the most by the team since 2007.
Alfred Williams recorded his first career interception, and
Martique Vanderpool made his second career interception and first since the 2008 season. Against Gannon,
John Wynder made his first interception since the 2008 season, and
Gary Tillman recorded the third interception of his career.
• Sutjak's three interceptions are a career-high and the most by any Millersville player since Brandon Shelton in 2007.
ASSIST TO THE DEFENSE
•
Zack Riley scored a defensive touchdown for Millersville in week one by returning a fumble off of a quarterback sack. It was Riley's first career touchdown and the the fumble return for a touchdown by a Marauder since Derrick Bass scored on a fumbled punt against Slippery Rock on Sept. 6, 2008. It also marked the second time in three season openers under Greg Colby that the defense has generated a touchdown. Against Bentley in 2008,
Dan McClellan returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown.
BOMBS AWAY
• Five times this season, the Marauders have scored touchdowns of 50 yards or longer and also had a 51-yard pass and 52-yard run.
Bill Shirk hooked up with
Matt Egenrieder for an 87-yard touchdown pass in the season opener and also found him for a 50-yard strike in week two.
Jamal Smith hauled in a 78-yard touchdown pass and 53-yard catch against Kutztown and a 75-yard touchdown pass in week three. Smith caught the 51-yard pass in week five.
• The 87-yard pass was the second-longest pass reception in school history, trailing only Drew Folmar and Sean Scott's 91-yard strike in 2000. Shirk has completed 18 passes of more than 35 yards during his time as Millersville's starting quarterback. In week three alone, he completed four passes of more than 35 yards to Smith.
• Shirk has two touchdown passes of at least 80 yards in his career. He has three of at least 75 yards this year.
PASSING LEADER
• Shirk posted a career-high 423 yards passing against Gannon on Sept. 18, becoming the first Millersville quarterback to throw for 400 yards since Dan Csencsitz threw for 410 in 2004.
• It was the third 300-yard-plus passing game and second of the season for Shirk. He also hit the mark on Oct. 18, 2008 against C.W. Post. Shirk's three performances are Millersville's only 300-yard games since 2004.
DOUBLE THE FUN
• Both
Matt Egenrieder (106) and
Jamal Smith (103) recorded more than 100 yards receiving in the season opener against Assumption. It marked the first time two Millersville receivers totaled 100 yards in the same game since Smith and Andy Tischbein in 2008 and just the second time since Sept. 4, 2004.
• Millersville has had at least one 100-yard receiver in five of the first seven games. Smith has four 100-yard games and Egenreider has two.
• In week two, Egenrieder totaled 116 yards receiving and
Mike Jones totaled 100 yards rushing, giving a 100-yard rusher and 100-yard receiver in the same game for the first time since Nov. 1, 2008.
DYNAMIC DUO
• Egenrieder was knocked out of the Kutztown game on the first play, but the duo has still combined for 1,328 or Millersville's 1,760 receiving yards (75.4 percent) and ranked first and sixth in the PSAC in receiving yards per game.
• Millersville is the only team in the PSAC with two receivers ranked in the top 10 in receiving yards per game.
• Smith is averaging 121.4 yards per game, which is 27.5 yards per game more than Darnel Williams of C.W. Post who is in second place. Egenreider is averaging 68.3 yards per game. They also have the two longest receptions in the PSAC this year.
• The pair is aiming to total more receiving yards than any other duo in school history. Mike McFetridge and Sean Scott set the bar in 1998 when they totaled 2,139 yards. Egenreider and Smith need to average 203 yards per game over the next four games to set a new standard.
A PLACE IN HISTORY
• With 1,760 yards in seven games, Shirk is the first Millersville quarterback to turn in three career seasons of 1,700 or more passing yards since Drew Folmar (1997-2000). He is just the fourth QB all-time to achieve that feat.
DO-IT-ALL JAMAL
• Senior
Jamal Smith has displayed the ability to be a game changer. His Smith is second in the PSAC and ninth nationally in all-purpose yards with an average of 164.6 per game.
• Smith came within 10 yards of a school record against Gannon by totaling 340 all-purpose yards. He also totaled 208 all-purpose yards against Kutztown, 182 against C.W. Post on 70 receiving and 103 return yards. He totaled 152 all-purpose yards in the season opener on 103 yards receiving, 25 yards rushing, and 24 yards on one punt return and one kick return.
• With 47 catches, Smith leads the PSAC and 26th in Division II in catches per game. He also leads the PSAC in receiving yards per game (121.4) and is seventh in Division II.
• Smith has eclipsed the 100-yard receiving mark eight times in his career including four times this season.
• Smith totaled a career-high nine catches against Assumption and matched that total against Kutztown. He became the first Marauder since Andy Tischbein on Nov. 1, 2008 to record nine catches in a game.
• Smith is the first Marauder with back-to-back 700-yard receiving seasons since Sean Scott accomplished that feat during the 1999 and 2000 seasons. Additionally, another 1,300-plus all-purpose yard season would mark the first time a Marauder has turned in back-to-back 1,300-yard efforts since Kevin Cannon turned in 1,600-plus yard campaigns in 1994 and 1995.
• His current average of 121.4 receiving yards per season would put him on pace for 1,335 yards, which would be a school record. His average of 167.0 all-purpose yards per game would put him at 1,837 yards and second most all-time.
SMITH FOR THE SCORE
• Smith has four multi-touchdown games this year and has totaled 10 scores. He ranks third in the PSAC in scoring and leads the league in receiving touchdowns with nine.
• Smith can score from anywhere on the field. He has totaled 35 career touchdowns including 21 receiving, seven rushing, six passing and one on a kick return. 14 of the 17 receiving touchdowns in his career have gone for more than 20 yards.
• Smith ranks fourth in Millersville history in receiving touchdowns in a career. He passed Aaron Wyley (1976-79) and now trails Kevin Cannon (1992-95) by one for third.
• Smith's four touchdown outing against Kutztown in 2009 tied Kevin Cannon's school record for receiving touchdowns in a game.
• In '09 Smith joined California's A.J. Jackson and Shippensburg's Mike Harris as the only three receivers with 10 or more touchdowns during the season. Smith's 10 receiving touchdowns marked only the third time in school history that a receiver hauled in at least 10 touchdowns through the air. The last time a receiver hit the 10 touchdown mark was Sean Scott in 2000, and no Marauder has ever had two seasons of 10 receiving touchdowns.
MAKING STOPS
•
Shane Gross, with 57 tackles, ranks eighth in the PSAC. Fellow linebacker
Jeff Longley ranks 16th. Before being injured,
Pat Maloney had recorded double-digit tackles in all five games he played.
• Senior safety
Matt Sutjak has led the Marauders in tackles each of the last two years and has totaled 209. He started his 2010 campaign with 13 tackles against Assumption. It was the fourth time in his 25 career games that he has recorded more than 10 tackles in a game. He totaled double-digit stops three times in 2009 including a career-high 15 against Shippensburg on Sept. 26. He currently ranks 16th in the PSAC in tackles.
• Last year, Sutjak ranked sixth in the PSAC in tackles with 92. He was the first Marauder to total more than 90 tackles in a season since Joe Hollister, the 2004 PSAC East Defensive Player of the Year. Sutjak was also the first Marauder to lead the team in tackles in back-to-back seasons since Lee Rizzotto (1997-1999). Since tackle stats started being tracked in 1973, only John Petrus (1986-88) and Rizzotto have led the Marauders in tackles for three-straight seasons. Sutjak has an opportunity to join that club this year.
O CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN
• The Millersville football team voted a trio of players as the captains for the 2010 season. Seniors
Bill Shirk,
Jamal Smith and
Chad Miller will assume the roles.
Chad Miller was also voted a captain in 2009, making him a rare two-time team selection. Both Smith and Miller were named All-PSAC East Second Team last year. All three players have plenty of experience. Miller and Smith are entering their fourth seasons as starters, and Shirk has piloted the team as the quarterback for two seasons.
BACK FOR MORE
• Four Millersville players were named All-PSAC East in 2009 but just two return. Defensive tackle
Chad Miller was named All-PSAC East Second team and wide receiver
Jamal Smith was also named All-PSAC East Second Team. In addition to his postseason mention, Smith was selected as the PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 25 for his four-touchdown, 255-all-purpose-yard performance against Kutztown. Smith was also the 2007 PSAC East Rookie of the Year as a quarterback. That season he threw for 807 yards and rushed for 633.
• Miller has an opportunity to enter select company as a Millersville defensive tackle. The last Marauder defensive tackle to earn back-to-back All-PSAC East mention was Jamar Gordon in 1995-96.
A GRAND MILESTONE
• In Millersville's 120 years of football, only a handful of players have totaled 1,000 yards rushing or 1,000 yards receiving in a season. 1,000 yards rushing has been accomplished 14 times since 1970 and only Ricke Stonewall eclipsed that mark twice. Totaling 1,000 yards receiving is even more rare as only Mike McFetridge (1,131) and Sean Scott (1,030) accomplished the feat. They hit the milestone back-to-back in 1998 and 1999.
