Erie, Pa. - On year ago, the Millersville men's golf team used a third-place finish at the Mercyhurst Fall Invitational as a boost into the NCAA Tournament. This year was a different story, though. The Marauders dug themselves an early hole in the first round and couldn't recover Sunday, finishing seventh in a seven-team field.
Millersville opened with a 312 total on the par 72 Harborcreek Golf Course. That score put them 19 shots out of first place, which was held by Indiana (Pa.). The second round score improved by seven strokes, but all but one team also improved in round two.
Derek Baker of IUP took medalist honors with rounds of 68 and 69, finishing at 7-under-par. Matt Dudas turned in his best two-round effort of the season to lead Millersville. His back-to-back rounds of 76 placed him at 8-over-par and in a tie for 18th.
Robert Coyne finished 25th at 10-over-par, and Jeff Stokes shot 11-over and placed 27th. Brian Cooper and Chris Fieger tied for 36th at 14-over-par.
Millersville has not finished in the top half of any of the first five tournaments of the year. The 2009 runner-up will try to right itself heading into the PSAC Championship in Hummelstown, Pa., on Oct. 16-17.
