Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville wrestling team will host the Seventh Annual "Shorty" Hitchcock Memorial Classic on Sunday, Jan. 17 at Pucillo Gymnasium. Registration is currently open for the first 250 wrestlers.
Wrestlers interested in competing should pre-register with Millersville coach Todd Roberts by e-mail. Wrestlers should provide name, weight, school (attached or unattached). Competitors can also register in person at Pucillo Gymnasium from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, but with the limit at 250 wrestlers, pre-registry is strongly encouraged.
Skin check begins at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 17 and weigh-ins begin at 7 a.m. The action starts at 9 a.m. The tournament format is NCAA rules with seven minute matches and riding time. Awards will be given to the top three in each weight class.
The entry fee is $35, and check should be made payable to the "Hitchcock Fund."
Millersville has been hosting a wrestling tournament since 1974-75, but six years ago, the format was changed from a team competition to an "open" and renamed in the honor of former Millersville coach Floyd "Shorty" Hitchcock, who passed away in 2002. Hitchcock served as Millersville's wrestling coach from 1984-2002 and totaled a school record 180 dual victories during that span with a winning percentage of .613.
