Box Score
Millersville, Pa. – Millersville senior
Brad Lantz gashed Shippensburg for a season-high 107 yards, but the Marauders were still no match for Shippensburg's potent offensive attack which rolled up 566 yards of offense en route to a 63-24 win over the homestanding Marauders Saturday evening.
The Red Raiders (4-1, 2-0 PSAC East) were as consistent and steady as the rain pouring on Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium. Roshaan McCain totaled 188 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, Kevin Herod totaled 87 yards and Mike Frenette added 65 to pave the way to a 354-yard rushing performance.
The Red Raiders averaged 7.9 yards per carry, and quarterback Chase DiFebbo provided plenty of air support, completing 12-of-16 passes for 186 yards and five touchdowns.
Millersville's (1-4, 0-2 PSAC East) 24 points was its best offensive showing since the season opener, but it was the second straight week the defense surrendered 63 points at home. Still, Millersville looked to be in line for an upset in the second quarter, but Shippensburg scored 35 unanswered points that put the game out of reach.
After forcing Shippensburg to punt on its first drive, Millersville quickly marched to the Red Raider 4-yard line and scored the game's first points on a 21-yard field goal from
John Banzhof.
Shippensburg answered immediately with a seven-play drive that was aided by two Millersville personal fouls. DiFebbo found Mike Harris from seven yards out to give the Red Raiders a lead that would stand the rest of the way. Ship boosted the lead to 14-3 early in the second frame on a nine-yard TD run by McCain.
Millersville wouldn't go away. After
Chad Miller pounced on a DiFebbo fumble at the Millersville 45,
Bill Shirk completed three straight passes including a 10-yard strike to
Jamal Smith to cut the deficit to 14-10.
McCain kept the Marauders in the rear view, though, as on the first play of the next drive, he ripped off a 74-yard TD run.
The Marauders came right back with a strong drive that was sparked by a pair of Lantz runs, a Lantz reception and a 28-yard Shirk scramble.
Matt Egenrieder made it 21-17 with an 11 yard rush up the right sideline.
But that would be as close as the Marauders would get. Ship scored twice more before the half to make it 35-17 and then scored 21 unanswered in the third quarter. Millersville found pay dirt one more time early in the fourth when Shirk found Smith for his second TD toss of the day.
Lantz's 107 yards were the most be a Marauder since
Cardoza Jacks rushed for 139 on Oct. 25, 2008. It was Lantz's first 100-yard rushing game since totaling 152 yards against Nov. 10, 2007.
Smith led the Marauders in receiving with seven for 94 yards, tying a career high in catches, and his two touchdown catches set a career high.
Matt Sutjak led the Marauders with a career high 15 tackles.
Millersville returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 3 at fifth-ranked Bloomsburg.
