Moundsville, W.Va. - With a sparkling 2-under-par 68 in the final round, Millersville junior Nick Magenta captured first place at this weekend's WJU Invitational contested at Moundsville Country Club in Moundsville, W.Va.
Magenta's final round was four shots better than the next lowest round, and it was also the lowest round of the tournament by three shots. The 57-player average was a full 12 strokes more than Magenta's score.
He rebounded brilliantly after shooting an opening round 7-over-par 77, leapfrogging Charleston's Donald Weller and Ohio Valley's Mark Thomson, who both finished at 6-over-par. Magenta clipped the WVIAC competitors by one shot to earn his first collegiate tournament win.
Magenta's 68, however, came as an individual an not as part of Millersville's team score. Still, Millersville turned in a five-player, final round total of 300. It was the low team score of the day and put the Marauders in second place, five shots behind Charleston which shot a 38-over-par 598.
Leading Millersville's scoring was redshirt freshman Matt Dudas, who tied for fourth for the best finish of his young career. Dudas opened with a 4-over-par 72 and closed with a 75 to finish two shots behind Magenta. Sophomore Brian Cooper finished tied for 21st at 14-over-par, and classmate Shane Henry tied for 23rd, one shot behind Cooper.
Freshman Tyler Harman fired an opening round 74, but slipped into a tie for 28th after shooting an 84 on day two. Junior Ben Rowe rounded out Millersville's scoring at 26-over, and in 46th place.
Millersville returns to the course on Sunday, Oct. 4 at the Cal Vulcan Invitational.
