Clarion, Pa. - The Millersville men's golf team opened its 2009-10 campaign with a fifth-place finish at the Hal Hansen Invitational this week.
The Marauders were paced by three top-30 finishers and made a strong surge on the second day to climb up the standings. After the first round, the Marauders stood eighth in the 14-team field. The team's 300 first-round total was 16 shots off the pace set by eventual champion Indiana (Pa.).
But the Marauders roared back, firing a 294 total in the second round to finish with a 18-over-par 594.
Millersville's top finisher was junior Ben Rowe, who shot a 2-over-par 74 on day one and a 1-over-par 73 on the second day to finish 3-over and in a tie for 18th. Brian Cooper's tournament started slowly, but he fired an even-par round on the second day to finish in a tie for 24th at 5-over-par.
Matt Dudas, making his Marauder debut, also matched Cooper's 72 in the second round. He finished at 6-over-par and tied for 28th. Senior Nick Magenta placed in a tie for 35th at 8-over-par. Newcomer Tyler Harman posted a two-day total of 9-over-par, and sophomore Shane Henry placed 56th at 12-over-par.
IUP came away with the team title after shooting back-to-back rounds of 284, finishing at 8-under-par. The nearest team was Ohio Valley, who finished at 5-over. Both Cory Dillinger of Davis & Elkins and J.R. Jones of Ohio Valley finished the tournament at 3-under-par.
Millersville travels to the Wheeling Jesuit Invitational held in Moundsville, W.Va. on Sept. 21-22.
