Millersville, Pa. — A school record 18 wins and a trip to the national quarterfinals earned the Millersville men's soccer team a No. 6 ranking at the end of 2008. The Marauders will open their 2009 slate with that No. 6 ranking after the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) recently released its NSCAA/adidas Division II pre-season poll.
Millersville finished with an 18-3-1record last season, climbing as high as fifth in the NSCAA/adidas rankings on Nov. 4. The Marauders advanced all the way to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals, before falling to Northern Kentucky 2-1 in penalty kicks.
The Black and Gold will look to fill the voids left by graduates Ryan Kiley, Matthew Procopio, and 2008 leading scorer Sean McLaughin. Junior keeper Matt Langione leads a squad that should be strong from the goal out. Langione posted 6.5 shutouts and boasted a 0.94 goals against average last season. Millersville should be set on offense as well, as it returns three of its top six scorers from a year ago in Kyle Loughlin, Pat Baffuto, and Dan Prian.
Every team that held a top 25 position in the final 2008 NSCAA/adidas Division II poll remained in their exact spot in the 2009 pre-season poll. Defending national champion Cal State Dominguez Hills opens the season with the No. 1 ranking. Dowling (N.Y.), Tampa, Northern Kentucky, and Midwestern State (Tex.) round out the top five. Millersville is one of three PSAC teams to crack the pre-season poll. Slippery Rock is ranked 18th to start the season, while East Stroudsburg opens at No. 19.
The Marauders kick-off their 2009 season on August 28 with a tilt against Philadelphia at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
