Daniels, W.Va. - Millersville senior Darryn DeShong closed out his stellar golf career Wednesday afternoon at the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional, finishing in a tie for 51st in a field of 108 golfers.
Weather continued to be the story, and pars, let alone birdies, were hard to come by at the Glade Resort Golf Club Cobb Course in Daniels, W.Va. DeShong finished at 26-over-par, 18 shots back of the winner, but early on, it looked as if he was making one final push up the leaderboard.
DeShong started his round on the eighth hole and after back-to-back bogeys, he found his swing and registered three straight pars and then birdied the par-3 13th. Despite dropping a shot at 15, he played the back nine in an even par 36. His final seven holes, however, didn't go as smoothly.
Not a single player in the field shot even par in the final round, and the round of the day belonged to IUP's Leo Acklin, who fired a 1-over-par 73 to move from eighth to second. Concord's Emmanuel Charmat took first place by shooting a 5-over-par 77, finishing at 8-over for the tournament. He finished one shot ahead of Acklin and Fayetteville State's Joel Lynn.
IUP took home the team title with a 51-over-par 915--three shots better than Fayetteville State.
The Cobb Course was treacherous all week. Eight of the holes played a half-stroke over par, and the field posted an average score of 82.
The tournament concluded DeShong's four-year Millersville career. He totaled three top-10 finishes in his final four events and finished as a tournament runner-up twice during his time as a Marauder. The Chambersburg, Pa., native graduated last Saturday.
