Annapolis, Md. - Millersville men's golf senior Darryn DeShong fired an even-par final round Sunday afternoon at the Navy Spring Invitational to crack the top 10 for the third straight tournament. The rest of the team, however, faded three spots to ninth.
DeShong was five over and in 34th place after the first round. But Sunday's 71 was bettered by only two other players and he flew up the leader board and finished just five shots behind the winner, Binghamton's Trevor Fielder who was even par for the tournament.
DeShong has finished in the top 25 in nine of 11 tournaments during the 2008-09 season and in the top 10 four times. In his last three tournaments, he has finished sixth, second and ninth.
Unfortunately, the rest of the Marauders slipped on day two and finished six shots higher (307) than their first day score (301). Trent Coldren's 7-over-par 78 gave him a 158 total and placed him tied for 26th. Nick Magenta posted an 82 and fell into a tie for 52nd.
Ben Rowe improved from his first day 79 with a 78 and tied for 54th. Freshman Shane Henry finished one stroke behind Rowe and in a tie for 64th.
With Millersville on the outside of the NCAA regional as of Sunday, it appears that the Navy Spring Invitational was the final of DeShong's outstanding Millersville career. Twice he finished in the top 20 of the PSAC Championships and was a runner-up two times in the last two years.
As a team, Millersville finished in the top half of six tournaments this season.
