Marauders Roll to Doubleheader Sweep of ESU

Game 1
Game 2

Millersville, Pa. - Friday's key PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader against East Stroudsburg was Millersville's first action in 11 days, but the team showed no signs of rust as it notched a 5-0 win in the opener and a 9-6 victory in the nightcap to push its winning streak to a season long six games

The Marauders evened their conference record with the sweep, improving to 7-7 in the PSAC East and 20-15 overall. East Stroudsburg, which stood behind Millersville for the final playoff spot from the East entering Friday, dropped to 24-19 overall and 6-12 in league play.

Sparking the Marauders was the hot bat of Derek Kline and a pair of outstanding starting efforts from freshmen left-handers Kyle Belanchik and Jason Long.

Kline went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in both games, giving him three hits in four consecutive games and two or more hits in five straight. In his last five games, Kline is 14-for-19 (.737) with seven RBIs and doubles.

Like Kline, Belanchik continued a run of success. It was his first start against a PSAC East opponent, and he twirled the second complete game shutout of his young career, scattering five hits and walking just one while striking out four. Over his last three starts, Belanchik has surrendered just two runs in 21.1 innings.

With Belanchik (4-2) cruising on the mound in game one, the Marauder's offense started quickly. In the bottom of the first, Kline drilled a two-run home run and two batters later, Cody Wile gave the Marauders a 4-0 lead on a two-run homer of his own.

ESU starter Steve Prazenka (3-3) was bounced after the first, and while Jason Colletti pitched five solid innings in relief, the Marauders managed another run in the fifth when Wile drove in Kline with an RBI single.

Kline, with three hits and two RBIs, and Wile, with two hits and three RBIs, drove in all five of Millersville's runs. Adam Boyd and Ryan McCormick each contributed a hit as well.

It didn't take long for Millersville to strike in game two either. McCormick led off the first with a walk and moved up on a Boyd bunt single. With runners on first and third, Boyd attempted to take second but was caught in a run down. However, he managed to avoid the tag at second and McCormick raced home for the game's first run. Kline immediately followed with an RBI single, giving Millersville a 2-0 edge.

Wile recorded an RBI single in the third to boost the advantage, and after ESU picked up one off Long in the fourth, the Marauders came right back and used RBI hits from McCormick, Boyd, and Kline and a sacrifice fly from Miles Gallagher  to grow the advantage to 7-1.

ESU chipped away at Millersville's lead and drew within 7-6. But in the bottom of the sixth, McCormick took advantage of a throwing error to score a run, and Gallagher squeezed home Boyd with a bunt.

Andrew Clemens pitched a perfect seventh for his second save of the season.

Along with Kline's three-hit effort, the Marauders received the first three-hit performance of Boyd's career. Including Friday's doubleheader, Boyd has recorded at least one hit in his first six games since making his debut on March 29.

The Marauders also went 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts.

Long (2-2) picked up the win for the Marauders after allowing three runs on five hits through 4.1 innings. He also struck out five and walked just one.

Millersville travels to East Stroudsburg Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
