Chowan Edges Marauders in Slugfest

Murfreesboro, N.C. - Millersville's offense blasted six home runs and for the fourth-straight game totaled double-digit runs, but it was not enough as Chowan out-slugged the visiting Marauders 19-18 in 11 innings Sunday afternoon.

Chowan (9-6) out-hit the Marauders (8-7) 25-24, but Millersville also committed six errors leading to six unearned runs. It was Millersville's highest scoring game since combining for 40 runs with Franklin & Marshall in 1985.

Millersville has scored 60 runs in the last four games, but the loss snapped the team's three-game winning streak. Millersville last three losses have been by one run each.

Derek Kline turned in an outstanding afternoon at the plate, going 5-of-8 with a double and three RBIs. Cody Wile extended his hitting streak to 10 games with two home runs. He also drove in three and scored three times. Miles Gallagher hit his second home run in as many days and finished with three hits and three RBIs. Andrew Dochterman, Charlie Haley and Scott Slembecker also hit homers for the Marauders. Lance Miller, who went 4-for-7, also stole two bases.

10 different Marauders recorded at least one hit and eight players tallied two or more hits.

The Marauders scored at least one run in nine of the 11 innings and built a 10-1 lead after four. Chowan chipped away at the advantage by scoring five runs--three of which were unearned--in the fifth, but the Marauders answered in the top of the sixth with two more runs on RBIs from Haley and Slembecker.

Starter Ryan Stauffer exited the game after 5.1 innings, having allowed six runs, three of which were earned. But a tired bullpen could not keep Chowan at bay. Keith Bires, making his fourth appearance in six days, retired the side in the sixth, but in the seventh, he was roughed up for seven runs on six hits. Chowan totaled eight runs in the inning to cut Millersville's lead to 15-14.

The Marauders tacked on one run in the eighth and the ninth, but Chowan charged back in the bottom of the ninth with three runs to tie the game and send it to extras.

Wile ripped his second home run of the game in the 10th, but Chowan tied it in the bottom of the inning, and after Millersville failed to score in the top of the 11th, Chowan ended took advantage of Millersville error following it with an RBI single to win the game.

David Busch took the loss for Millersville despite not allowing an earned run.

Sunday's game concluded a road trip for the Marauders that included seven games in six days. The Marauders being Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action against nationally ranked West Chester on Friday. The team makes its home debut Saturday, March 14 at 1 p.m. against West Chester.
