No. 21 Francis Marion Needs Walk-Off Homer to Top Marauders

Box Score

Florence, S.C. -
The Millersville baseball team had the No. 21 team in the nation on the ropes Tuesday afternoon, but Francis Marion used a walk-off home run from Preston Shuey in the bottom of the 10th to top the Marauders, 10-9.

Millersville struck early, scoring two runs in the first and three in the third to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Francis Marion, however, slowly chipped away, scoring at least one run in seven-straight innings beginning in the second to take an 8-5 lead into the top of the ninth.

But two Francis Marion errors and a walk to Miles Gallagher filled the bases for the Marauders, and Derek Kline cut into the lead with a two-run single. With two on and one out, Andrew Dochterman knotted the game at nine with a two-run double, scoring Kline and Gallagher. Francis Marion reliever Barrett Kleinknecht, however, was able to escape the inning without further damage.

Andrew Clemens took the hill for Millersville in the bottom of the frame and sat down the first batter he faced. Colby Green started the inning with a single and then advanced to second an error and moved to third on a wild pitch. The Marauders elected to load the bases with two intentional walks, and Clemens proceeded to pick up a 6-4-3 double play, extending the game.

Ryan McCormick singled for the Marauders in the top of the 10th, but he was left stranded. Shuey then led off the 10th with a solo shot to left field, giving Clemens (0-1) the loss and Josh Biggers (2-0) the win.

Francis Marion improved to 11-6-1 on the season while the Marauders dropped to 4-5. Two of Millersville's five losses have been by just one run.

Senior Cody Wile turned in an outstanding performance, going 4-for-5 with a homer, two doubles,  four RBIs and two runs scored. Kiline added two hits, two RBIs and two runs, and Dochterman drove in three runs on two hits.

The Marauders travel to Coker College Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
