Marauders Earn Pair of Key Wins Over Shippensburg

Game 1
Game 2

Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville baseball team notched two key PSAC Eastern Division victories over Shippensburg Saturday behind a pair of sterling pitching efforts from Forrest Mengle and Derek Kline as well as some clutch hitting.

Led by Mengle and a two-run seventh inning, the Marauders captured game one, 3-1. In game two, Kline limited Shippensburg to just one hit over five innings before the weather set in over Millersville University Stadium and ended the contest after five full innings with the Marauders on top, 5-2.

With the wins, the Marauders moved above .500 at 16-15 overall, but more importantly, they kept pace in the division by splitting the four-game series with Shippensburg and improving to 5-7 in league play. Shippensburg, now 14-19 overall, dropped to 4-4 in the division.

Shippensburg racked up 15 runs in Friday's doubleheader, but Mengle quieted the Red Raiders Saturday as he battled to his second-straight complete game against a conference foe. He has not allowed more than two runs in each of his last seven starts and improved his record to 5-1 in the process.

Mengle scattered eight hits and walked four, but aside from Shippensburg's one run on two hits in the third, he kept the visitors off the scoreboard.

Millersville managed to take an early lead when Andrew Dochterman plated Miles Gallagher on an RBI groundout in the second inning. Shippensburg starter Kody Kibler (2-2), however, would blank Millersville over the next three innings.

But in the bottom of the sixth, with runners on second and third, Dochterman worked a full count and singled through the left side to give the Marauders a 2-1 edge. Scott Slembecker followed with an RBI ground out, helping the Marauders to a two-run lead.

Shippensburg quickly pieced together two singles in the top of the seventh off Mengle. Steve McCardell followed with a single to left, but a perfectly executed relay between Cody Wile and Michael DeSanto cut down Tyler Reddick at the plate for the second out. Mengle then escaped the jam by getting a fly out to end the game.

Dochterman and Keith Spencer led Millersville at the plate with two hits apiece.

Game two also provided plenty of drama. Millersville started quickly with three runs in the first, but recorded just one hit in the inning. Scott Stevens drew a bases loaded walk for the first run. And with the bases loaded and two outs, a failed Shippensburg pick off attempt at first base allowed two Marauders to cross the plate.

Working with the lead, Kline (2-1) was outstanding. Making just the third start of his career, he allowed an unearned run in the second and another unearned run in the third. But Kline overcame three Millersville errors by striking out three and walking none.

Millersville boosted the lead to 4-2 in the third when Spencer plated Adam Boyd with an RBI walk. Gallagher recorded an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to put Millersville up three.

The sixth inning was started but halted before Millersville could bat because of lightning, rain and high winds. After a delay, the umpires called the game because of unplayable conditions.

Kline not only pitched well, he went 2-for-3 with a double and a run. Wile went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, and Gallagher doubled and walked twice.

The Marauders will look to continue its streak on Tuesday, March 31 with a home doubleheader against Indiana (Pa.). The game can be heard on MSBN. Live stats will also be provided.
