Marauders Move Above .500 With Sweep of USP

Game 1
Game 2

Millersville, Pa. - After cruising to a 9-0 win in game one of Sunday's non-conference doubleheader against University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, the Millersville baseball team used the long ball to pull away for a 7-5 win in game two.

The sweep pushed the Marauders' winning streak to four and put their record above .500 at 14-13.

Freshman pitcher Kyle Belanchick (2-2) was outstanding in the opener as he pitched his first career complete game. The Marauder bats were slow to get started, scoring only one run in the first four innings, but Belanchick was up to the challenge. He surrenered just six hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out six.

Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Marauders took full advantage of four USP errors in the inning and scored four runs. Cody Wile drove in two with a double.

Wile doubled in a pair in the sixth as well, and Ryan McCormick and Andrew Dochterman both tallied RBI singles to give the Marauders four more runs and a 9-0 win.

In game two, the Marauders received a big lift from Miles Gallagher and Chris Edgar. Gallagher drove in the team's first run in the first inning with a sacrifice fly, and Edgar singled in a run in the second to give Millersville an early 2-0 lead.

USP took a brief lead with a three-run fourth inning, but Edgar knotted the game in Millersville's half of the inning with another run scoring single.

Some uncharacteristic defensive lapses led to another USP run in top of the fifth, giving the visitors a 4-3 advantage. Gallagher, however, made sure that lead wouldn't last. In the bottom of the inning, he ripped a three-run home run over the left field wall, giving Millersville the lead for good. Edgar followed with his first career home run in the sixth for some added insurance.

It was Gallagher's third home run in as many days and gave him 11 RBIs in his last six games.

Edgar finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Derek Kline recorded two hits and stole two bases. Scott Slembecker went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Keith Bires (2-0) worked two innings of relief to earn the victory, and Andrew Clemens pitched the final two innings to notch his first save of the year.

The Marauders are off until Friday when they travel to Shippensburg for a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader.
