ABOUT THE GAME
• The Marauders open the PSAC Tournament fresh off a 2-0 week that included wins over East Stroudsburg and Mansfield.
• Millersville has won its last six games and 11-of-12 since January 21. The Golden Bears are winners of four in a row, but endured a tough stretch of games from Feb. 4 to Feb. 14, losing 3-of-4, including a 73-69 setback at Millersville.
• Millersville is 38-20 versus East Stroudsburg, dating back to the 1922-23 season. The Black and Gold took all three meetings with the Warriors last season, including a 66-51 win in the PSAC Quarterfinals.
• Kutztown picked up its first win in its last 16 tries against Millersville back on Jan. 17. It marked the first time Kutztown has beaten the Marauders since the 2000-01 season. MU leads the all-time series 45-19 and has compiled a 29-12 record against the Golden Bears under current head coach
Mary Fleig.
• Millersville and Kutztown have met three different times in the PSAC Tournament. The Marauders hold a slight 2-1 edge in the previous playoff match-ups. Kutztown's win came in the 1998 PSAC Tournament (48-41), while Millersville picked up victories in 2002 (67-51) and 2005 (69-56).
• Should the Marauders advance to Friday's semifinals, it would be the program's 17th trip to the PSAC Semifinals since 1981-82. MU has advanced to the semifinal round in each of the last 7 seasons. 2001 was the last time Millersville did not make it out of the quarterfinal round.
• Students from PSAC member institutions with a valid ID will be admitted free of charge to Tuesday night's game. General admission charges are $7 for adults and $2 for students. PSAC Passes will be honored.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
• Kutztown has the fifth highest scoring offense in the PSAC at 69.4 points per game. The Golden Bears have hit the 70-point plateau 10 times this season and have gone for 80+ on four separate occasions.
• The Golden Bears have played well on the road this season, compiling an 9-5 record away from Keystone Hall. All of Kutztown's PSAC East losses, however, came on the road. Millersville held off Kutztown 73-69 at Pucillo Gymnasium when the Golden Bears made their only visit to Lancaster County on Feb. 14.
• Before their Jan. 17 victory over the Marauders, the Golden Bears had not beaten Millersville since the 2000-1 season, when they took down the Black and Gold 69-41.
• Junior Rachel Wisemiller and sophomore Melissa McQuade lead a balanced Kutztown scoring attack. Wisemiller is averaging 15.8 points per game (8th in the PSAC), while McQuade puts up 15.6 points per game on a team that boasts three ladies averaging double-figures in scoring.
• Chauntelle Schroeder is a force inside and is amongst the team leaders in points and rebounds. Schroeder is pulling down 6.7 rebounds per game, which ranks her second on the team. She is the third leading scorer for the Golden Bears at 10.8 points per game.
• Senior Lara Dellegrotti is averaging just under 10 points per game (9.6), but provides some help in key areas for Kutztown. Dellegrotti is an 85-percent foul shooter (64-for-75) and has the second most 3-pointers (33) on the team. She hits from deep at a 36-percent clip, good for second best on the team, and her 40 assists rank fifth on the squad.
• McQuade's 15.6 points per game rank her ninth in the PSAC, while her 10.0 rebounds per game place her third in the conference.
• Kutztown leads the PSAC in free throw shooting, converting over 78-percent of its attempts at the charity stripe. The Golden Bears are getting to the line an average of 17 times per game.
• KU is also an unselfish squad, dishing out 18.0 assists per game, good for third best in the conference.
THE LAST TIME OUT
• Mansfield put up a fight on its senior day, trailing by just two points at halftime, but the Millersville women's basketball team took its game to another level in the second half, outscoring the Mountaineers 34-18 and earning a share of the PSAC East title with a 61-43 victory on Saturday afternoon.
• The Marauders (22-5, 11-3 PSAC East) scored the first four points of the game, but it was Mansfield (7-20, 3-11 PSAC East) that carried play throughout the better part of the first half. Mallory Moore's layup at the 6:53 mark gave the Mountaineers their first lead of the day at 10-9. Mansfield, which only scored 12 points in the first half in its first meeting with Millersville this season, easily eclipsed that mark on Saturday.
• Mansfield's lead reached seven points when Courtney Brooks converted a layup to make it 16-9. Millersville, however, responded with a 10-0 run. Senior
Gladine St. Julien and junior
Aiesha Bellamy sparked the run with four points apiece. The Mountaineers reclaimed the lead, 25-24, on a layup by Morgan Hafer, but
Ashley Moyer buried a 3-pointer on the Marauders' final possession of the first half to give the visitors a 27-25 halftime lead.
• Millersville, behind Moyer and St. Julien, quickly put together an 8-0 run to start the second half. Mansfield cut the lead to five on a layup by Moore with 14:34 remaining, but from there, the Marauders took over. Millersville's lead ballooned to 24 with 6:14 to go, following a 21-2 run that made it 60-36. The Mountaineers would trim some of the deficit off in the waning moments, but the Marauders soundly secured a share of the PSAC East title. After going 12-0 in the East last season, Millersville continued its prominence within the division by racking up an 11-3 record in conference play this season.
• St. Julien paved the way for the Marauders, scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Four Marauders finished in double-figures, as Bellamy (12), Moyer (12), and
Sophia Waters (10) enjoyed solid afternoons.
Jenna Craig picked up a game-high 11 rebounds in the contest. Mansfield was paced by leading scorer, Mallory Moore, who had 19.
• Millersville's defense did a wonderful job on Moore's supporting cast. Moore was 6-10 from the floor, but her teammates managed to shoot just 8-of-45 from the floor.
THE 700 CLUB
• Millersville's women's basketball program began in 1918 and since then, it has compiled 705 wins. Win number 700 came in a 69-44 defeat of Shippensburg on February 11, 2009. Under head coach
Mary Fleig, the Marauders have compiled almost half of those victories with 345.
•
Mary Fleig coached her 700th career NCAA basketball game on Wednesday, February 4, at East Stroudsburg. The Marauders picked up a 51-47 overtime win in the milestone game for the veteran coach. Fleig is in her 26th season on the sidelines. In 19 seasons at Millersville, Fleig has recorded 345 victories. Her career coaching record is an impressive 467-240 and ranks her among the top 10 winningest coaches in NCAA Division II history.
STARTING STRONG
• Millersville's 11-2 non-conference record marked its best start to a season since 2000-01, when the Marauders started 13-2. The 2000-01 squad finished with a 21-6 record, but fell in the PSAC Quarterfinals to West Chester.
CHARITY TROUBLES
• Millersville is looking to change its fortunes at the charity stripe this season. The Marauders rank last in the PSAC in free throw percentage at .624 (391-for-627). In 2007-08, Millersville finished seventh in the conference, shooting close to 70-percent. Surprisingly, MU has made the fifth most free throws in the league (391) and attempted a league-high 627.
WORKING OVERTIME
• Millersville went to overtime in back-to-back games versus East Stroudsburg on Feb. 4, and West Chester on Feb. 7. It marked the first time the Marauders have played in consecutive overtime games since taking Cheyney and Kutztown to the extra session during the 1989-90 season.
• The Marauders made a bit of school history when their game with West Chester went to overtime on February 7. Millersville had never gone to overtime twice in one season with one opponent. The Marauders and Golden Rams went to overtime in the PSAC East opener back on Jan. 14. West Chester emerged victorious in both overtime contests in 2009.
HIT THE BOARDS
• Forward
Jenna Craig has been a rebounding force for the Marauders this season. The Lewistown, Pa. native has collected 10+ rebounds in seven of her last twelve games. Craig grabbed a career-high 16 boards in the Marauders double overtime loss to West Chester on Feb. 7. The junior is averaging 9.6 rebounds per game this season and has 14 double-figure rebound games.
RETURN TO SENDER
• The Marauders blocked a season-high eight shots against Cheyney on Jan. 28. The last time Millersville blocked eight shots or more was Feb. 22, 2006, when the Black and Gold swatted 10 Kutztown attempts away.
• Senior
Gladine St. Julien recorded five blocks against Mansfield on Jan. 31. St. Julien became the second MU player to record five blocks in a game this season. Gretchen Fricko ('96) holds the record for blocks in a game with 10 (12/7/95 vs. SUNY-Stony Brook).
HOW LOW CAN THEY GO?
• Millersville allowed just 26 points in its win over Mansfield on Jan. 31, marking the fewest points the school has given up in a game since 1979-80. That season, Lynda Humphreville's squad held Lebanon Valley to just 17 points in a 75-17 win.
• The fewest points allowed in the
Mary Fleig era, prior to Jan. 31, was 28 against Cheyney back in 1992-93 (94-28).
LOFTY EXPECTATIONS
• After posting a 24-6 overall record and a perfect 12-0 mark in the PSAC East a year ago, MU was pegged to finish second in the PSAC East this season in the preseason coaches poll.
• Shippensburg, a newcomer to the PSAC Eastern Division, was picked to finish at the top of the division in 2008. West Chester, who qualified for the PSAC playoffs last season as the second seed, finished the season at 9-3 in the division and is picked to finish one spot behind Millersville in third. Kutztown, who won just four games in the division last year, is picked fourth, while East Stroudsburg is fifth.
• Forward
Gladine St. Julien, an All-PSAC Eastern Division First Team selection last season, was named to the 2008 Preseason All-PSAC East Team.
POWER FORWARD
• Forward
Gladine St. Julien stepped up in a huge way last season after the loss of Preseason All-PSAC selection Ashley Romanoski due to injury. St. Julien led the Marauders in scoring average (12.5) and was second on the team in rebounding, averaging 6.7 rebounds per game.
• The 6-0 forward scored in double figures in 21 of the team's 30 games last season and managed four double-doubles. St. Julien led MU in scoring 13 times and rebounding 11 times.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME
• Since Millersville began playing its home games in Pucillo Gymnasium in 1982, the Marauders are an impressive 259-78 at home in 26 seasons. The team has never won less than seven games at Pucillo in a single season and has never had a losing record. Millersville has recorded three losses or fewer at home in 18 of 26 seasons at Pucillo, including a stretch of seven straight seasons from 1996 to 2002. MU is currently 10-2 at home in 2008-09.
WHO NEEDS SPRING BREAK?
• Extending the season into March is becoming commonplace at Millersville. This season, the Marauders earned their 13th straight trip to the PSAC Tournament. MU has appeared in the PSAC Tournament 16 times in
Mary Fleig's 19 year tenure.
• Despite falling in the 2008 PSAC Semifinals to California (Pa.), the Marauders entered the NCAA Division II Tournament as the No. 7 seed in the East Region. Leading with under eight minutes to play in the opening-round contest, the Marauders eventually fell for the third time on the season to California (Pa.) to end their season.
• The Marauders have competed in the NCAA Tournament five times under the direction of Fleig and have posted a 2-5 record in those appearances. Millersville defeated Pitt-Johnstown, 75-71 to advance to the regional semifinal in 1999 and the 2002 team knocked off Belmont Abbey, 84-60 to advance for the only two victories.
HAPPY NEW YEAR
• Millersville has compiled a 109-66 record in the month of January since 1990-91. The Marauders own a winning percentage of .623 in the month. The only month the Marauders have performed better in is November (45-22, .672). MU has only had three losing records in the month of January in the 19 season time span. This January the Marauders finished 7-3.
RECORD BREAKERS
• In the season-opening 101-30 victory over Columbia Union, the Marauders eclipsed the 100-point mark for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. In that season the Marauders ironically knocked off the same team (Columbia Union) by a score of 102-52.
• The 101-point effort was helped in large part to the 60 first-half points scored by the Marauders which broke the school record of 54 set by the 1992-93 team in a lopsided win over Holy Family.
• The 71-point margin of victory also broke the school record set by the 1992-93 team that defeated Cheyney by a final score of 94-28.
DEFENSIVE REIGN
• Millersville allowed only 42 points against Indiana (Pa.) on Jan. 3, 2009, marking the lowest point total by IUP since 2004.
• Millersville has now held its opponents to less than 50 points in 15-of-27 games this season. The Marauders held PSAC East foes under 50 points on six separate occasions in 2008-09. In 2007-08 they accomplished the feat five times in conference games.
TWICE AS NICE
• Millersville has put an even greater scoring lockdown on two opponents this season, holding each to just 30 points, a feat never before accomplished by a Marauder team under coach Fleig.
• The Marauders opened the season in convincing fashion by downing Columbia Union 101-30. On Nov. 19, just four days later, Millersville pulled the feat off once again, this time in a 69-30 victory over Goldey-Beacom. In the win, the Marauders held the Lightning to just two second-half field goals.
