Cheyney, Pa. — Millersville jumped out to a 10-point halftime lead and all five starters scored in double figures as the women's basketball team downed Cheyney 72-58 on Wednesday night.
A pair of Stephanie Orji buckets got the home team jump started, as Cheyney (11-10, 6-5 PSAC East) pulled out to a 12-4 lead in the first 5:33. It would be the Wolves largest lead on the evening though, as Millersville (19-5, 8-3 PSAC East) stormed back with a 13-2 run over the next four and a half minutes. Jenna Craig converted a 3-point play and
Jenna Philo knocked down a triple, putting the Black and Gold up 16-14.
Gladine St. Julien capped the run by knocking down a free throw with 10:05 to go in the opening half.
The two teams went back and forth over the next five minutes, swapping the lead five times. With the game tied at 25, Millersville closed the half on another big run.
Aiesha Bellamy went 4-of-4 at the line and
Sophia Waters hit a 3-pointer, while Craig and
Monica Newman each recorded a pair of points to give MU a 36-29 lead. Junior
Ashley Moyer may have delivered the biggest blow, however, draining a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Millersville a 39-29 halftime lead. The Marauders finished the half on a 14-4 run.
The ladies came out of the locker room charged up and extended the run to 20-4 by scoring the first six points of the second half. The 16-point lead was a game-high. Cheyney would cut the lead to seven on three different occasions, but could get no closer. St. Julien and Bellamy were instrumental in holding the Marauders' advantage. The two combined to go 6-of-7 at the line in the second half and scored 16 of Millersville's 33 points over the final 20 minutes.
It was another big night for the Marauders from beyond the arc, as they hit on 7-of-11 attempts (63.6-percent). Bellamy led the way with 15 points, while Philo scored 13. Craig recorded a double-double, scoring 11 and pulling down a team-high 10 rebounds. Moyer and St. Julien both scored 10 points apiece.
Cheyney got 30 of its 58 points from Stephanie Orji (17) and Lutfiyya Muhammad (13), but the two players shot a combined 12-of-32 from the floor. Orji took a game-high 20 shots and the Wolves shot just 32.8-percent for the game.
Millersville returns home Saturday afternoon when it takes on Bloomsburg at Pucillo Gymnasium. The Marauders will be looking for win number 20 on the season and their second consecutive 20-win season. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
