West Chester, Pa. — For the second straight game, the Millersville women's basketball team used an extended defense to overwhelm an opponent, this time forcing Lincoln (Pa.) to throw the ball all over the court in a 75-59 victory at the Carol Eckman Memorial Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The full court press paid dividends in the second half of last night's game against Chestnut Hill, but the Marauders went to it early and often against an overmatched Lincoln (2-7) bunch. Dominique Stroman and
Mashira Newman each picked up a pair of steals in the first eight minutes and
Sophia Waters added another to stifle the Lions' offense. Millersville (6-0) capitalized on the turnovers with fastbreak lay-ins from
Jenna Craig and Newman.
Unable to find offensive flow early on, the Marauders shooters took over throughout the middle part of the first half. A layup from Lincoln's Mfon Ekanem made it 13-8 with 12:36 to play in the opening half, but from there Millersville reeled off 12 of the next 14 points to build a 25-10 lead with 8:32 remaining. In what's been a Marauder trademark this season, the scoring came from all over, as five different players helped spawn the run.
When Lincoln did get something to go down on offense, Newman made sure the good feelings didn't last long. Twice she responded to Lincoln baskets by driving the length of the court and finishing at the hoop. Her sixth bucket of the half came on the final possession of the half and gave the Marauders a 46-30 lead at the half.
Aurielle Mosley picked up right where she left off last night, registering 10 first half points. The redshirt freshman had her way inside, finishing off almost every ball fed to her in the low post. The pairing of Mosley and Newman finished the first half with 23 points. The two also combined to shoot 11-of-13 from the floor (85-percent).
Millersville's dialed in defense continued to harass the Lions in the second half, forcing eight more turnovers before the period was eight minutes old. Craig and Waters took care of matters on the offensive end by scoring 10 of the team's first 17 points in the half, with Millersville pushing it's lead to a game-high 27 points, 63-36, at the 8:31 mark.
Turnover troubles continued for the Lions in the second half, and the Marauder reserves put the finishing touches on the team's second consecutive 6-0 start.
Carrie Sheffey, who was hampered by a knee injury last season, came off the bench to post a career-high seven points and added five rebounds.
Lincoln turned the ball over 34 times and shot just over 33-percent on the afternoon. The Black and Gold cashed in, scoring 33 points off of turnovers in a game in which it never trailed. The Marauder bench was up to the task again, as MU's reserves outscored Lincoln's by a wide 49-18 margin. Millersville's bench players have outscored the opposition's bench 217-84 through six games, as MU is averaging 36.1 points per game off the pine.
Newman finished with game-highs of 14 points and eight steals, while Mosley added 12 points and six boards. Stroman finished in double-figures for the second straight game, scoring 10, including a perfect 4-of-4 day at the charity stripe. Craig finished with nine points in just 12 minutes of run, as 13-of-14 Millersville players scored in the contest. DeJuana Mosley led a trio of Lady Lion double-digit scorers with 12. Second leading scorer Sharay DuBose finished with 11, while freshman guard Danielle Smallwood added 10 before leaving with an ankle injury early in the second half.
Millersville will have an eight day layoff before hosting Goldey-Beacom at Pucillo Gymnasium on Monday, Dec. 14. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
