Millersville, Pa. – On a night where Millersville unveiled its All-75th Season Team, it was newcomer sensation Mashira Newman once again wowing the home crowd, and this time, past players. Her court leadership, combined with a poor shooting night for visiting Lock Haven, helped the Marauders roll to a 72-52 win at Pucillo Gymnasium on Saturday evening.

Early on it looked as if the Marauders (2-0) would run away with their second straight game. Newman, drawing her first collegiate start, scored the first five points and MU built a 12-1 lead 7:33 into the contest. The lead would grow to as many as 14 on a Dominique Stroman jumper 28 seconds shy of the half's midway point. Lock Haven (1-2) helped the cause by not registering a field goal over the first 10:04, but once it did get a bucket, numerous others quickly followed.

It took just 2:25 for the Lady Eagles to cut Millersville's lead to 21-15 after finally putting the ball in the hoop. Casi Donelan and Kristen Kudrick led the comeback charge for LHU, but the Black and Gold quickly put the clamps on the rally. Newman answered with a long ball on Millersville's next possession and the Marauders kept LHU at bay for the rest of the half to lead 37-27 at the break.

Unable to find its offensive identity for much of the first half, Millersville turned to Newman to ensure that wouldn't be a problem during the second half. Her four points and two assists helped bump the Millersville lead to 17 early in the half, but The Haven, coached by former Marauder Jen Smith, fought back once again. The resurgent Lady Eagles, 3-24 a season ago, got buckets from Tyeshia Carroll and Peaches Nesmith, as well as a pair of free throws from Kudrick to trim the lead to 11.

A 12-0 Millersville run over 5:24 made it 65-42 and gave MU its largest lead of the night at 23, clearing up any questions about the game's outcome with six minutes to go. Newman finished as the game's leading scorer for the second consecutive night, pouring in 22 points. Her nine rebounds left her one board from her first career double-double. Senior Jenna Craig put forth another steady performance with eight points and 11 rebounds, as Millersville started 2-0 for the sixth time in eight seasons. Fellow senior Ashley Moyer added 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc.

The Marauders' three-point effectiveness continued for a second straight night, as they shot 50-percent from downtown to just over 43-percent from the field. Moyer and Newman led the way in that department, as each knocked down three triples. Lock Haven's sluggish offense managed to shoot just under 22-percent from the floor (12-of-55), but the Lady Eagles did make a living at the charity stripe, going 25-of-30.

Prior to Saturday's game, 45 former players, who were chosen by former coaches, were honored for their contributions to Millersville women's basketball throughout its 75-seasons of play. Some of Millersville's greatest teams were also recognized on the night.

Millersville returns to action Monday evening with its first road game of the season. The Marauders head down to Philadelphia to take on the University of the Sciences at 6 p.m.
