California, Pa. - Millersville men's golf sophomore Brian Cooper recorded the best finish of his young career as the Marauders placed 11th at the two-day Vulcan Invitational.
Cooper shot a 1-under-par 70 at the par 71 Cedarbrook Red Course and followed it with a 3-over-par 75 on the gold course to finish with a 2-over-par 145 for the tournament. He finished in a four-way tie for fourth and five strokes off the pace set by Clarion's Jared Schmader. Schmader opened the tournament with a 5-under-par 66 and coasted to victory on the second day.
Sophomore Tyler Harman continued his steady climb, finishing at 6-over-par and in a tie for 12th. After placing 41st in the first tournament as a Marauder, Harman has placed at least 13 spots better in each subsequent tournament.
Unfortunately for the Marauders, who had placed second at the Wheeling Jesuit Invitational, only Cooper and Harman cracked the top 30. Freshman David Long finished with a two-day total of 156 and in a tie for 37th. Redshirt freshman Matt Dudas, after shooting an 82 in the first round, battled back with a strong 4-over-par 76 in the second round but finished tied for 44th.
Chris Orlando tied for 49th and Shane Henry finished one shot behind and in a tie for 53rd. Nick Magenta won the Wheeling Jesuit Invitational two weeks ago but limped to a 68th place finish Monday.
As a team, the Marauders placed 11th out of 13th teams with a two-day score of 617. They were fourth among PSAC schools and ahead of Mercyhurst and Gannon. Indiana (Pa.) took the team crown with a 581 total.
