Shippensburg, Pa. — It may not have gone down the way they planned it, but the second-ranked Millersville men's soccer team downed Shippensburg 3-2 in a seesaw game on Saturday afternoon, finishing off a second straight undefeated PSAC Eastern Division slate.
A lack of shots mattered not for the Red Raiders (1-13-4, 0-6-2 PSAC East), as Alex Supplee put the heavy underdogs ahead just over 12 minutes into the game. Supplee finished off a pass from Dustin Andrews on what would be one of Shippensburg's two shots in the first half.
The Marauders (16-1, 8-0 PSAC East), meanwhile, unleashed a shot barrage on Ship keeper Clay Sale. Opportunity after opportunity went awry, until
Anthony Pagnotti tied the game on a long distance shot that found the upper left corner of the net. It was the senior's fourth goal of the season and it came in the 36th minute.
Millersville continued to apply heavy pressure and held a 10-2 shot advantage at the half.
The teams remained in a 1-1 deadlock until
Matt Wilson forged Millersville ahead in the 65th minute.
Aaron Roland's header found open space, where Wilson collected it and beat Sale for the Marauders' first lead of the afternoon. Just like Pagnotti, the goal was number four on the season for Wilson and his first since Oct. 3, a span of seven games.
Ship refused to go down easily, rallying for the game-tying goal in the 79th minute.
Matt Langione turned away Dave Rostad's initial shot, but Michael Celius was there to bang home the rebound to make it 2-2.
Much like he's done all season, leading-scorer
Kyle Loughlin answered the bell when the Marauders needed it most. Loughlin, who's been slowed by an injury the last few games, netted the game-winner just 3:32 later, his 11th tally of the season.
Langione made three saves to pick up his 16th victory in 17 games. Clay Sale turned aside seven shots in defeat.
Millersville now gets set for the post-season, which starts Wednesday when the Marauders host a PSAC Semifinal game against Bloomsburg. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
