East Stroudsburg, Pa. - Saturday's PSAC East clash between East Stroudsburg and Millersville stood scoreless after the first quarter, but in a matter of 15 minutes of football, the Warriors stormed in front with four unanswered scores, sending Millersville to a 44-3 defeat.
East Stroudsburg's Matt Marshall threw a pair of touchdown passes and Kevin Williams added a 32-yard touchdown run as ESU turned a tied game into a 20-point advantage in a little more than a seven minute span. Before Millersville scored its only points of the game--a 30-yard field goal from
John Banzhof at the end of the first end--ESU had scored 23 points in the quarter thanks in part to a pair of costly Millersville turnovers.
Millersville (3-7, 2-6 PSAC East) held the Warriors (7-3, 4-3 PSAC East) to just 25 yards rushing in the first frame and was driving for an early lead after
Julius Carter's interception put the offense in business. But ESU's Mark Kalo returned the favor, intercepting
Bill Shirk at the ESU 27-yard line, turning the tide of the game permanently in favor of the Warriors.
Marshall engineered a nine-play, 78 yard drive that took just two minutes and ended in a Sam Shuman touchdown grab seconds into the second quarter. After two Millersville punts, Williams got the ESU running game untracked with his 32-yard jaunt into the end zone. And on the ensuing kickoff,
Matt Egenrieder lost a fumble at the ESU 21. On the next play, Marshall found Ed Kiser for a 20-0 lead.
East Stroudsburg gashed Millersville 107 rushing yards in the second quarter alone and went on to finish with 243 on 47 rushes.
Millersville's hopes of a second half comeback was quickly put to rest as East Stroudsburg scored on each of its first two possessions and outgained the Marauders 140-18 in the quarter.
The Marauders finished with 227 yards of offense to ESU's 504. Shirk endured a rough day, as he was sacked four times--three times by Jeff Case--and completed 9-of-24 passes with two picks. He managed only two completions in the entire second half. Millersville did manage to rush for more than 100 yards for the fifth time in the last six games, and
Brad Lantz totaled 82 yards on 17 carries. Lantz now has 2,566 career rushing yards and moved into fourth place on Millersville all-time list.
Jamal Smith caught four passes for 62 yards but all of his receptions came in the first half.
On the defensive side, freshman
Pat Maloney recorded a career-high 15 tackles including 11 solo stops.
Ryan Christian also set a career high with 13 including one for loss.
The Marauders close the 2009 season Saturday, Nov. 7 with a home game against Edinboro. Game time is 12 p.m.
