Hummelstown, Pa. - The Millersville men's golf team charged up the leaderboard with a strong Sunday performance, resulting in a second place finish at the PSAC Championships held at Hershey Links Golf Club.
The rain-plagued tournament's first round that began Saturday extended into Sunday, forcing several players to play more than 18 holes on Sunday. Millersville close the opening round in fourth place and 11 shots out of second. But all four Marauders that finished in the scoring equaled or bettered their first round total, helping the team to a 302 second round total and a score of 39-over-par for the tournament.
California (Pa.) opened with a 302 but closed with a 313, landing the Vulcans in a tie with the Marauders. Indiana (Pa.) was the only team to shoot under 300 for both rounds, firing a 298 in the first and 294 in the second to finish at 16-over-par and with the PSAC Championship.
Millersville's second round run was led by three players that tied for 11th. Sophomore Brian Cooper and junior Ben Rowe both shot 5-over-par 77 in both rounds and finished at 10-over-par for the tournament.
Joining Cooper and Rowe in 11th place was redshirt freshman Matt Dudas, who sparked the team's comeback effort as he responded from a first round 8-over-par 80 with a sparkling 2-over-par 74. The 74 tied for the team's low round of the championship and was the fourth best score of the second round.
Tyler Harman improved his first round total by one stroke, turning in a 6-over 78 in round two and landing him in 19th at 13-over for the tournament. Junior Nick Magenta, winner of two tournaments this season, struggled out of the gate, shooting an uncharacteristic 90 in the opening round. But he bounced back with a 2-over 74 in round two.
IUP's Brad Boyle edged teammate Gavin Floyd in a playoff for the individual championship. Both players finished at 1-under-par for the championship.
The conference championship concludes Millersville's fall schedule. The team finished third or better in four of six fall tournaments.
Since the start of the PSAC Championship in 1988, Scott Vandegrift's Marauders have finished third or better 12 times and have finished lower than fourth just once.
