C.W. Post's Two-Headed Monster Too Much for Marauders

Box Score

Millersville, Pa. – Thomas Beverly ran for 111 yards and three touchdowns and quarterback Eric Anderwkavich picked up 135 markers on the ground, as visiting C.W. Post scored 35 first half points en route to a 35-3 victory over the Millersville football team on Saturday afternoon at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.

The Pioneers (3-5, 3-2 PSAC East) turned in their second best rushing performance of the season, racking up 328 yards. It didn't take long for them to get started, with Anderwkavich ripping off a 55-yard run on Post's first play from scrimmage. Two plays later, Beverly plunged in from nine yards out to make it 7-0.

Beverly, who was named PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week two weeks ago, made it two for two on the next drive. After moving the drive along with his own 47 yard scamper, the freshman finished off the six play, 67-yard drive with a four yard trip to the end zone.

Unable to maintain any offensive flow, the Marauders (2-6, 1-4 PSAC East) saw all four of their first quarter possessions come up dry. Three of those drives ended in John Banzhof punts. Anderwkavich hit Chris Harris from 16 yards out to make it 21-0, Post, before Millersville quarterback Bill Shirk was intercepted by Detrick Belvin on the Black and Gold's final drive of the quarter.

Post parlayed the pick into another score when Beverly scored from two yards out early in the second quarter. The Pioneers were aided by two Millersville penalties on the drive and found themselves with a comfortable 28-0 lead just two minutes into the second frame.

The Marauder defense didn't allow points in C.W. Post's fifth drive of the afternoon, but whatever momentum the home team was trying to grab back was quickly dashed when Shirk was intercepted deep in Millersville territory by Billy O'Connor. O'Conner made the play at the MU 15 and carried the ball back inside the five. Anderwkavich wasted no time in giving the Pioneers a 35-0 lead, getting to the corner for a 2-yard touchdown run.

Millersville used an 11-play, 44-yard drive to get on the board just before halftime. A 12-yard hookup from Shirk to Greg Frantz and a 12-yard Brad Lantz run helped the Marauders move the ball down the field. The drive would stall inside the Post 30, but Banzhof connected on his sixth field goal of the season, this one from 38-yards out, to cut Post's lead to 35-3 at the break.

Neither team made much of a move on offense in the third quarter. The Pioneers came up with three first downs, but did not find the scoreboard. Their defense took care of business though, holding Millersville to just six yards of offense in the quarter. Both offenses continued to struggle in the fourth and the teams played to a scoreless second half. Unlike the Pioneers, the Marauders' offense found yards tough to come by all afternoon. Millersville was held to just 102 yards of total offense, its lowest output of the season and lowest since accumulating 88 yards of offense in a 36-7 loss at Shepherd (W.Va.) back on Aug. 25, 2007.

Lantz led the way on the ground for MU, picking up 47 yards on 14 lugs. Shirk had a tough day, completing just 4-of-15 passes for 47 yards and the two interceptions. It marked the first time Shirk has been held under 10 completions in his last 13 games. On defense, Julius Carter and Jeff Longley led the way with eight and seven tackles, respectively. Longley and Christian Rodriguez also came up with fumble recoveries. Both Brian Knell and Gary Tillman were able to intercept a pass by C.W. Post backup quarterback R.J. Kuhn. The Pioneers defense was lead by Peter Manns, who registered 12 tackles (2.5 for a loss) and a sack.

Millersville will look to right the ship next Saturday afternoon when Kutztown is at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium for the Marauders' homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
