
Marauders Break Three Records in Season-Opener Victory

Millersville, Pa.- The Millersville women's swimming team opened its season in impressive fashion Friday evening breaking three school records and posting a 137-49 victory over Mansfield at Pucillo Natatorium.
Freshman Sarah Bernhardt kicked off her collegiate career by breaking three school records, two in individual events and one with the 200 yard medley relay team. Millersville (1-0) took four of the top six places in the 50 yard freestyle, with Bernhardt posting a 25.21 to beat the school record by .40 seconds. She also claimed the 100 yard butterfly record with a time of 1:00.61, sealing another first place finish in the process.
The young Marauder 200 yard medley relay team, consisting of Kelsie Jones, Bernhardt, Breann Martinez and Sara Steinagel, took first place with a record-breaking time of 1:54.17. Millersville claimed all but one of the top six spots in the 200 yard individual medley, with Jones placing first with a time of 2:18.83. She also took first in the 100 yard backstroke in 1:03.34.
Freshman Laura Castello finished first in the 1000 yard freestyle with a mark of 11:35.93, while junior Amy Leiphart took third. Sophomore Vicky DeTample swam a 200 yard freestyle time of 2:06.81, and freshman Arielle Walbert swam a 5:36.00 in the 500 yard freestyle, both earning first place finishes.
Martinez claimed the 100 yard breaststroke first place mark with a time of 1:12.45, with Becca Laufer and Leiphart taking second and fifth places, respectively.
Millersville returns to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 24 when it hosts Juniata. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
