Erie, Pa. - The Millersville men's team has been close to a team title all fall. On Monday at the Gannon Fall Invitational, the Marauders finally broke through behind four-10 finishes. Junior Nick Magenta, playing as an individual, also earned his second individual title of the season.
On the par 72 Lake Shore Country Club, the Marauders fired a 19-over-par 307 to finish 12 shots ahead of Gannon and 16 in front of Mercyhurst. The win is Millersville's first since the Goldey-Beacom Invitational in the spring of 2008.
Magenta, who won the Wheeling Jesuit Invitational in September, went out in 37 and closed with a 1-under 35 for an even-par 72. He finished two shots ahead of the pack, led by teammate Chris Orlando.
Magenta's round, however, did not count toward Millersville's team score. But the Marauders still took first with an oustanding all-around effort led by Orlando's 2-over-par 74. Sophomore Tyler Harman finished in a tie for fourth at 5-over, and redshirt freshman Matt Dudas and sophomore Brian Cooper tied for seventh with at 6-over-par. Junior Ben Rowe finished just outside the scoring at 8-over-par, but placed 10th overall.
Dudas now leads the team with three top-10 finishes in five events, and Cooper ran his streak of consecutive top-25 finishes to five.
There seven teams from five PSAC schools competitng at the event.
The Marauders will look to carry the momentum from Monday's victory into the PSAC Championships, which begin on Oct. 17 at Hershey Links in Hummelstown, Pa.
