Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville women's basketball team entered Sunday's PSAC Crossover with fifth-ranked California (Pa.) looking for its second-straight victory over a ranked opponent. The visiting Vulcans, however, had other plans and used a strong second half to pull away from the Marauders, 76-60.
Cal (8-2) led by as many as 17 in the first half before Millersville (9-2) cut the advantage to 35-30 at the half using an 11-2 run.
Jenna Philo scored all 12 of her points in the first, hitting four 3-pointers.
Emily Balogh, who totaled a season-high 14 points, sparked the Millersville comeback with eight first-half points.
Cal opened the second frame with 9-2 run and its offense clicked throughout the half, shooting 63.6 percent in the second frame. Millersville could not recover and never got closer than eight the rest of the way.
Millersville had not allowed more than 65 points all season and the 76 surrendered to Cal was the most scored against the Marauders since Feb. 17, 2007, when East Stroudsburg totaled 78--a span of 42 games.
Only Balogh and Philo scored in double figures. Millersville's two leading scorers on the season--
Gladine St. Julien and
Jenna Craig--managed just five and six points respectively.
California owned a 43-25 edge on the boards and scored 19 second chance points. Brooque Williams totaled 27 points and 10 rebounds and Lindsay Johnson recorded 23 points and 14 boards.
The Marauders continue PSAC Crossover action next weekend when they travel Slippery Rock on Saturday and Mercyhurst on Sunday. Tip-off for both games is 1 p.m., and both will be broadcast on MSBN.
