Kutztown, Pa. - Millersville University dropped its third consecutive dual meet Saturday 142-106 to the Kutztown Golden Bears, winning just five events out of 14. All three team losses have been on the road, and still without a win in 2009, the Marauders' record falls to 5-3.
One of the bright spots for the Marauders this season has been the performances turned in by the team's freshman. First-year swimmers again performed well on Saturday, even though their three first-place finishes weren't enough to pull out a team victory.
Freshman
Amie Mowery stood out for the Marauders, taking first place in two events. In the second-to-last event, Mowery posted personal and team bests in the 400 yard individual medley with her time of 4:54.36. She was also the first to post a victory for the Marauders Saturday, turning in a time of 2:18.83 in the sixth event, the 200 yard butterfly. Both times qualify her for participation in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Championships.
In the eighth event, Brittany Neifert took first place in the 100 yard freestyle with her time of 56.79, and four events later, in the 12th, freshman
Breann Martinez took first place in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:03.65.
Despite earning second place finishes, Neifert's time of 1:03.91 in the 100 yard backstroke and Martinez's time of 1:12.36 in the 100 yard breaststroke were personal and team bests.
The Marauders finished strong with Neifert, Katelyn Schmittle#, Rebecca Irvine and Martinez taking first place in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:47.94 in the final event of the day.
Next up for Millersville will be a three-way meet against Bryn Mawr and Ursinus at 1 p.m. on Feb. 7. The location of the event has yet to be announced.
