Kutztown, Pa. - The Millersville women's basketball team scored just two points in the final four minutes of Saturday's contest at Kutztown, and the homestanding Golden Bears were able to capitalize and send the Marauders to their second-straight PSAC Eastern Division loss, 60-56.
Millersville (11-4, 0-2) trailed by just one point at 55-54 with just 4:17 left on the clock. And while its defense limited Kutztown to just five points the rest of the way, its offense missed seven shots and committed three turnovers in its final 10 offensive possessions.
The Marauders remained within striking distance late, trailing 58-56 with eight seconds left after a pair of free throws from Jenna Philo. Kutztown's Rachel Wisemiller, however, put the game out of reach, hitting both free throws with six seconds left.
It was the true definition of a seesaw battle, as the lead was traded 11 times throughout the game. Kutztown led by six after a torrid start, but Millersville's defense put the clamps on and took the lead for the first time at 26-25 on a 3-pointer from
Emily Balogh with 6:21 left in the first period. With time running out in the half,
Ashley Moyer turned a steal into two points and gave the Marauders a 35-32 lead heading into the break.
Kutztown recovered by score the first five points of the second and built its largest lead (48-41) at the 13:45 mark with an 8-0 run.
The Marauders regain the lead once more but it stood for only one minute as they mustered just six points over the final 7:16.
Despite shooting just 32.9 percent from the field including 21.6 percent in the second half, four Marauders managed double figures.
Gladine St. Julien led the way with 13 points and nine rebounds--four of which were offensive.
Jenna Craig chipped in 10 points, nine boards. Philo added 12 and Moyer scored 10.
Millersville's defense was outstanding again, though, holding Kutztown to 37.7 percent shooting and only three made 3-pointers. The Marauders also forced 18 turnovers.
Kutztown improved to 12-3 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC East with the victory.
Saturday's game was the finale of a four-game road trip for Millersville. The Marauders return to Pucillo Gymnasium on Wednesday, Jan. 21 against Shippensburg.
