No. 7 Millersville Scores Early, Holds on Late

Box Score

Millersville, Pa. – The No. 7 Millersville men's soccer team got two quick first half goals and then held off a spirited West Chester comeback attempt in completing a regular season sweep of the Golden Rams on Tuesday night with a 2-1 victory at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.

Coach Steve Widdowson's Marauders (10-2, 6-0 PSAC East) were recognized earlier in the day, as they climbed up to No. 7 in the latest NSCAA/adidas poll. The team jumped 10 spots from its No. 17 ranking a week ago.

Millersville came out of the gates strong with a few scoring opportunities going by the wayside early on. Senior Sean McLaughlin would finally cash in for the Marauders in the 32nd minute when his shot was deflected by a West Chester defender and found its way past goalkeeper Garrett Santora. For McLaughlin, it was his team leading eighth goal of the season. Fellow senior Matthew Procopio picked up an assist on the tally.

Three minutes later, freshman forward Dan Prian's header found the back of the net off of a Procopio corner kick. Prian's second marker of the season made it 2-0 Marauders. Procopio picked up his second assist of the night and his team leading sixth assist of the season.

The Golden Rams (6-5-2, 2-3-1 PSAC East) quickly cut the Millersville lead to one in the second half. Jabari De Coteau was able to beat sophomore goalkeeper Matt Langione (York/Dallastown) one on one before finishing off West Chester's first goal of the evening.

The one goal deficit was as close as West Chester would get, however. Millersville was able to recover and hold off the hard-charging Golden Rams with solid ball possession throughout the second half.

The Marauders will return to Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium next Monday when they take on West Virginia Wesleyan in non-conference action. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
