Belle Vernon, Pa. - Junior Nick Magenta turned in his best finish of the season to lead the Millersville men's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Vulcan Invitational held at Cedarbrook Golf Club in Belle Vernon, Pa.
Magenta's even-par 72 in the opening round put him five shots back of the lead and he closed with a 76 to finish five-over-par and tied for ninth. The top 10 was the first of the season for Magenta. He had not been in the Millersville lineup since Sept. 9 and his previous he had finished tied for 74th and tied for 45th in each of his first two events.
Senior Darryn DeShong shot rounds of 75 and 77 to finish in a four-way tie for 22nd. Brian Cooper's 13-over-par placed him 33rd and Shane Henry (38th) and Trent Coldren (40th) each cracked the top 40 for the Marauders.
As a team, the Marauders finished with a two-day total of 614. The team shot a 299 on the opening day and slipped with a 315 in round two to finish in a tie with Lake Erie College. Top team honors went to Indiana (Pa.), which shot rounds of 283 and 293 to finish five shots ahead of Clarion.
Clarion, however, produced the top individual finisher. Jared Schmader topped IUP's Gavin Smith in a playoff. Both golfers shot four-under-par 139 through 36 holes.
The Vulcan Invitational served as a tune-up for the Marauders, as they prep for the PSAC Championships on Oct. 18-19. The conference championship tournament is being held at nearby Wren Dale Golf Course in Hummelstown, Pa.
