Over the course of Mary Fleig’s 30 seasons at Millersville, she has built a program that wins with amazing consistency. She has guided the Marauders to 25 PSAC Tournament appearances, 24 winning seasons and has won at least 16 games in 19 of her 30 seasons. A six-time PSAC East Coach of the Year, Fleig has won the annual award more than any other coach in history.
Fleig enters her 31st season with 645 victories in her career (523 coming at Millersville), ranking her 25th among all active women’s basketball coaches regardless of division. She is one of only 72 coaches in all of women's basketball with 600 career wins. She is the current owner of the fifth-most wins among active coaches in Division II and the 18th-most all-time.
Under Fleig’s watch, the Marauders have earned NCAA Division II Tournament berths nine times including four straight years from 2007 to 2011. The longest-tenured coach in program history, Fleig set a PSAC record in 2011 by guiding her club to a 15th-straight trip to the PSAC Tournament.
The only Marauder mentor to eclipse the 200 or 300-win mark in team history, Fleig has pushed that total over 500 and was selected as the 2001-02 District 2 Coach of the Year by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. She has coached 30 All-PSAC East First Team picks, and in 2018-19, Lauren Lister became Fleig's fifth PSAC East Athlete of the Year winner.
Fleig’s 20th season on the Pucillo Gymnasium sideline was a special one as she led Millersville to its third straight PSAC Eastern Division title and eighth NCAA Tournament appearance. Wins over West Liberty and No. 25 California (Pa.) landed the Black and Gold a spot in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championship in 2009-10. The Sweet 16 appearance was Millersville’s first since the 1999-00 season and the Marauders’ 25-6 record matched a program-best for wins, also set back in 1999-00.
MU has posted win streaks of 15 (2004-05), 14 (1999-2000 and 2007-2008) and 13 (2001-02) during the Fleig Era and has posted a 278-129 conference record. No PSAC East team has registered more conference wins in that span than Fleig’s Marauders.
Fleig’s 2007-08 squad went 12-0 in the PSAC East and was just the fourth in the history of the PSAC to complete an unblemished conference schedule. The 2004-05 campaign culminated in the Marauders’ first PSAC title in 18 years--and first in Fleig’s illustrious tenure--when the Black and Gold ended California’s three-year championship reign with a thrilling 76-71 triumph over the Vulcans in the “State Game” at Pucillo Gymnasium.
Her success at MU mirrors what she achieved at nearby Franklin & Marshall College where, during her seven years at the helm, she turned the Diplomat program into a Division III powerhouse. Fleig’s F&M teams posted a 122-60 record, captured three consecutive Middle Atlantic Conference Southern Division championships, and posted a 38-2 division record from 1987 to 1990.
Her last four F&M squads amassed 20-5, 25-4, 24-5 and 25-5 records-- an average of 23.5 wins per season and a phenomenal .832 winning percentage. Her 1987-88 squad won 19 consecutive games, captured NCAA Division III Middle Atlantic Regional title honors, and advanced to the national quarterfinal round. She also guided the Diplomats to three straight NCAA-III tournament appearances.
A native of Harrisburg, Fleig was a three-sport athlete at Central Dauphin High School. She went on to compete for four seasons each in basketball and field hockey at Lock Haven University.
Fleig earned a bachelor’s of science degree in health and physical education from Lock Haven in 1979. After she served three years as a teacher and coach at Delone Catholic High School, she moved on to the collegiate level as a graduate assistant coach at East Stroudsburg University (1982-83) where she earned advanced degree credits.
A member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, Fleig serves on the WBCA/Division II All-American Committee.
