LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Millersville University freshman Carnell Henderson earned a spot in the starting lineup and immediately turned in three award-winning defensive performances. On Monday, Henderson was named the PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Week.
Henderson's first three starts of the season led to a 3-0 week for the Marauders, which included a road win over first-place West Chester. Henderson totaled eight steals in the three games. He helped hold West Chester more than 10 points below its season average with two steals. Against Shippensburg, he drew the assignment of guarding Markus Frank, one of the PSAC's leading scorers, and he held Frank to nine points--his lowest output of the season--on 4 of 13 shooting. Henderson then helped Millersville hold Mansfield to 64 points on Saturday by recording three steals. Millersville's three opponents during the week averaged 66.3 points per game.
Henderson played a career-high 34 minutes and scored a career-high 16 points against West Chester. He has tallied two or more steals in four consecutive games and has led the team in steals eight times. Henderson's defensive efforts have improved Millersville to third in the PSAC in scoring defense, allowing 72.9 points per game. The Marauders also rank third in field goal percentage defense (.427) and first in blocked shots. '
The award is the first of Henderson's career, but he is the third Marauder to win division's defensive athlete of the week award this season, and the fifth Marauder to be recognized with one of the PSAC's two weekly awards.
