ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio - The season-opening Wheeling Invitational featured an impressive performance from Millersville's new-look women's golf roster. Led by Ashden Stitt's career-best fifth-place finish, the Marauders placed as the runner-up in a strong field.
Stitt matched her career-low round of 7-over 79 in the second round, moving up six spots on the leaderboard and finishing the event at 21-over. Scoring significantly improved across the board on Friday, as Millersville's team tally improved by 21 shots. The Marauders finished 25 shots behind Glenville State, but 12 clear of California (Pa.) and five teams from the Mountain East Conference. The Marauders' performance was notable after it had lost three key starters to graduation in the spring, including a pair of All-PSAC performers in Charley Kirby and Amanda Wolf.
Stitt dropped in three birdies in the second round and added five pars. She played holes 10-18 in 3-over-par. Junior Sydney Barnes climbed five spots on the leaderboard Friday with her 9-over 81, a score that earned her ninth place and her first top-10 since September of 2023. Freshman Eric Gerner shot an 82 on Friday and finished in 11th place. Her steady performance in the second round included five pars on the front nine and three more pars and a birdie on the back.
Sabrina Swope contributed an 88 to the team score on Friday and finished in 18th. Lex Pfeufer placed 20th and Anabelle McGowan sneaked into the top-25 with a 23rd-place finish.
Millersville hosts 13 other teams at Berkleigh Golf Club on Sept. 15-16 for the Millersville Fall Invitational.
