ERIE, Pa. - The Millersville men's golf team opened the NCAA Atlantic/East Super Regional with a 35-over 323, putting it in a tie for 16th out of 20 teams after round one.
Millersville still has 36 holes to gain ground, but the rocky start put it 24 shots behind the top three teams. Davis & Elkins raced to a five-shot lead with a 294, followed by California and Gannon, who shot matching 299 scores.
The usually steady Timothy Peters carded bogeys on four of the final five holes on the front nine, going out in 40. Peters recovered with a 37 on the back nine for a 5-over first-round score, which has him in 32nd place, nine shots back of leader Aidan Talent of Davis & Elkins.
Talent was one of three golfers to break par in the first round. Talent played his final 12 holes in 3-under.
Millersville's Eric Miller started well and was at 2-over entering the back nine, but a triple bogey on the par-4 10th hole derailed a promising round. He is in 52nd place at 7-over. Freshman Logan Wagner struggled early and was 6-over through seven holes. He steadied his play and finished his round at 10-over. Bo Meakim's 13-over also counted toward Millersville's team score.
The Marauders continue play at the super regional on Friday, teeing off with golfers from Pitt-Johnstown and Dominican at 10 a.m.
