Box Score MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — The Millersville women's tennis team dropped its first match of the spring season after winning the previous two, falling to Salem 4–3.
The day started strong for the Marauders, winning two of the doubles matches to earn the early point.
Chloe Abramowitz and
Luci Consigliere continued their strong start with a 6–2 win in the first decision of the dual, and
Sophie Lanius and
Yasmin Scott secured the doubles point with a 7–5 win.
Despite the strong start, Salem bounced back in singles play, presenting a tough challenge to overcome for the Marauders lineup. After falling in their doubles match,
Hui Jen Soo and
Lauren Hayes rebounded in their individual matches for Millersville. Soo took a close match by the score of 5–7, 6–4, 7–5, and Hayes controlled her match to win 6–0, 6–2. However, Salem was able to take the rest of the singles slate and win the four matches they needed to to clinch the victory.
Although it wasn't the result the Marauders wanted, head coach
Matt Helsel said there's nothing for them to hang their heads on after today's performance. Helsel was encouraged by the team's play today, and acknowledged that if they continue to play well, the results will follow.
"That was easily the best we've played this season, fall or spring," said Helsel. "I'm very proud of us today. That effort reminded me of some of the incredible matches we won last spring. We ultimately didn't get the final result we wanted, but if we're going to play like that day-in and day-out, this is going to be a fun ride. Difficult conditions and a tough opponent brought out the best in us today. Salem is always tough, and they just had a little more at the end, but again, we can't be disappointed in how we played today."
The Marauders will look to bounce back in warmer weather on their spring break trip, which starts with a dual at 9 a.m. on Monday, March 10 in Hilton Head Island, S.C. against Thomas More.
