Women’s basketball bested by Lock Haven in spirited conference clash

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — The Millersville Marauders gave the visitors from Lock Haven all they could handle, but the first-place Bald Eagles prevailed 54–47 Saturday afternoon. The hosts held the Bald Eagles to just 33.9% from the field but committed five more turnovers and allowed 15 offensive rebounds in the loss.

The tone of the game was set early on, with just two free throws shot in an especially physical first quarter. The Marauder defense welcomed that physicality and used it to their advantage, especially over the first three quarters; the Bald Eagles were kept below 30% on field goals prior to a 5-for-9 mark in the final period. Marauders head coach Kira Mowen was complimentary of her team's effort on that end when she spoke postgame.

"Our kids played hard," Mowen said.  "We had an exceptional defensive game today. We held Lock Haven to 39 points. Now, we put them to the free throw line maybe more times than I would have wanted to, but from a defensive standpoint, I can't ask anything else of our team." She then elaborated on that point, saying "Defense has always been our focus, and defense is what we do here. I think we did a great job of holding people."

Rhyan Mitchell had 10 points to lead the Marauders in scoring for the second time in her career. While the 'Ville shot a respectable 38.8%, they were on the wrong end of an 18-13 turnover differential and allowed 15 offensive rebounds. Because of that, the Bald Eagles had seven more shots despite shooting 21 free throws to the Marauders' nine.

"They're (Lock Haven) a great offensive rebounding team; they do a great job," Mowen said postgame. "Their two post players do a great job of really pushing us under, and we've got to find a way to push back or flip the script and then jam them under the hoop. We gave them more than they should have had."

With the loss, Millersville falls to 10–9 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play this season. The Marauders remain in a third-place tie in the East Division with West Chester, who they take on next in their final road contest of the 2024-25 regular season. That game's slated for Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m.
