Slow start dooms Marauders in critical showdown at West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. — A 13-point deficit after the first quarter put the Marauders in a hole they couldn't climb out of for the rest of the game. The visitors cut the margin to six at one halftime, but a rough third quarter led to a final score of 76–58 in favor of the West Chester Golden Rams. Millersville head coach Kira Mowen talked about her team's slow start after the game.

"From an offensive standpoint, we weren't hitting our shots and we settled a little bit too much by taking outside shots," Mowen said. . "I thought when we played them at home, we went downhill and got to the basket on them. At one point we were one for nine, so it was just a rough start. And while we were one for nine, they were getting some things and then they got some foul calls too."

Makiah Shaw and Bryn Zentner spearheaded an effort to bring the deficit to single digits leading into the half. Shaw finished with 22 points on 8-of-14 from the field and six of those came during the second quarter. Zentner hit an and-1 layup with under two minutes remaining and cashed out on another pair of attempts from the line a minute later to cut the margin to four. The freshman profited from the charity stripe all game, finishing 7-of-7 from the line for the game.

Millersville's issues in the first period were its inefficiency in scoring the ball (3-of-13 from the field), a leaky defense (the Golden Rams shot 46.7%) and too many turnovers (six). Those same problems popped up in nearly identical fashion in the third, but West Chester shot an even better percentage from the field (53.3%). The quarter finished 23–12 in favor of the hosts and snuffed out nearly any chance of a comeback.

"We just weren't there, and they (West Chester) were getting shots that they wanted," Mowen said of the team's defense in the third quarter. "It was a little bit of a lack of focus and a lack of knowing the plays. Their scorers did the things that they wanted to do and we couldn't stop just about anything."

The loss drops Millersville into a tie for fifth with East Stroudsburg in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division standings. However, the Warriors have the tiebreaker over the Marauders because they won both games against Millersville. The Bloomsburg Huskies sit at fourth at 11–10 after a win over Lock Haven on Wednesday, which completed their regular season schedule. They also have the tiebreaker over Millersville due to their record against top seeded conference opponents (Millersville is 0–4, Bloomsburg is 1–3).

This all adds up to the Marauders most likely heading on the road as a five or six seed in the first round of the playoffs on Monday, March 3. With a three way tie between the teams, they could end up as the fourth seed.

Millersville wraps up its regular season with Senior Day against the Shepherd Rams on Saturday, March 1 beginning at 1 p.m.
