Malecki clears NCAA mark with personal best at Susquehanna Invite

| By:
SELINSGROVE, Pa. — As the Marauders begin the final stretch of the indoor track & field season with one last meet remaining before the PSAC Championships, 'Ville had a strong showing at the Susquehanna Invite. The Marauders left with not just two more conference-qualifying bids but also the chance for a second athlete to go to Indianapolis for the NCAA Championships, as Megan Malecki hit the qualifying mark.
MEET HIGHLIGHTS
  • Malecki stole the show at the Invite, as the senior qualified for the national meet with a vault of 12-2 3/4, besting her previous personal record of 11-11 3/4 set just under one month ago. Malecki cleared her old mark on her third and final attempt, then rallied to hit the NCAA mark on her second attempt. After earning All-PSAC in the outdoor season last year, Malecki is well on track to earn the honor for the first time in the indoor season this year as she currently holds the second-best height in the conference. Additionally, with her and fellow pole vaulter Darian Hauf now qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships, the Marauders have the chance to send two athletes to the meet for the first time in program history.
  • Katelyn Murphy has seen steady improvement in her times all season, and this weekend was no different. The sophomore won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.99, putting her in a tie for first place in the conference. Murphy is now the third Marauder to post a time below 9.00 in the event as well.
  • In the 5,000-meter run, Emily Massage hit the qualifying mark in third-place finish. Massage was able to make it just under the time of 18:45.00 to earn a spot at the conference championships.
  • Danika Bolinsky will also be making a return to Lehigh for the PSAC Championships in the triple jump. Bolinsky hit a distance of 36-2 1/4, also earning second place at the meet.
  • The third and final new conference-qualifier from the meet was Cora Heilman in the 800-meter run. Heilman finished with a time of 2:22.77, taking fourth place in the process.
  • Sarah Hessler and Maddy Downs finished their days with first and third place finishes in the weight throw and shot put. Hessler won both, and was able to improve her mark in the weight throw to 42-8 1/4.
  • The Marauders put together a new team for the 4x400-meter relay and came away with an event win and improved team-best time on the season. The group of Shelby Derkosh, Jillian and Aubrey Sydnor, and Mary Weiss finished with a time of 4:02.66.
  • Aasly De Leon took the 60-meter dash and finished second in the 200-meter dash. She won with a time of 7.77 and her was runner-up with a time of 26.20
  • Derkosh and Aubrey Sydnor took the top two spots in the 400-meter dash, finishing with times of 59.86 and 1:01.31, respectively.
