LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - A 2-0 week that included a road win over a nationally ranked opponent netted the Millersville men's basketball team a sweep of the PSAC East's weekly awards.
Day Waters was named PSAC East Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career, and
Aamir Hurst earned the PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Week award for the second time.
Waters, who ranks second in the PSAC in scoring average (21.7), led Millersville to a road win over No. 20 Dominican and a PSAC opener win over Clarion by scoring his 1,000th career point, averaging 25.5 points per game, and tallying a career-high 31 points against Dominican.
"I'm really proud of Day," said Millersville head coach
Casey Stitzel. "I couldn't be more excited for him and the work he has put in. I love that he scored 1,000 points at the 'Ville. He is one of our leaders and has turned himself into one of the best players in the league."
Against the previously undefeated Dominican, Waters shot 12 of 21 from the field, hitting 5 of 11 threes and added five rebounds. He followed that performance with a game-high 20 points against Clarion, sinking 4 of 7 threes and adding 2 blocked shots. Waters has scored 20 or more points in five of seven games.
While Waters took care of the scoring, Hurst played lockdown defense with four steals and two blocked shots. He tallied two steals and a block in both games. With Hurst's defense, the Marauders held Clarion to a season-low 35.5% shooting and just 11 assists to 15 turnovers.
"I've challenged him to be the defensive stopper and our Swiss Army Knife on offense," said Stitzel. "He's done a good job of that. He should be a defensive player of the year candidate. He's one of the best on-the-ball defenders we've had here, and we've been blessed to have a lot of good ones."
Waters and Hurst have helped Millersville to four consecutive wins and a 5-2 overall record. The Marauders rank second in the PSAC in field goal percentage, first in free throw percentage. They handed Virginia Union and Dominican their only losses of the season to date.
