Fourth quarter execution propels Millersville past East Stroudsburg

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — It was a Jabria Ingram three-pointer with a little under a minute remaining that sent the Marauders past the Warriors and onto the next round of the PSAC Playoff Tournament. Millersville entered the fourth quarter down one to East Stroudsburg, but execution down the stretch gave the Marauders the 59-52 victory.

Ingram welcomed the Warriors to her office at the free throw line immediately. The graduate student scored the game's first three baskets on pull-up free throw line jump shots. Eight of the first 10 Marauder points came from the midrange. Rhyan Mitchell got the roll on a nifty post move at the end of the first quarter to put the Marauders up 16-10 heading into the second.

Redshirt junior Madison Grubb contributed early on in what could have been her last game as a Marauder. Her and-one driving layup over two defenders put the hosts up 19-10, their biggest lead of the half. She also scored the next basket for Millersville, a three-pointer from the right wing. The Warriors made inroads into the Marauder advantage in the middle of the quarter. The visitor's jump shots began to fall and they eventually took a 27-26 lead. The jumper was clearly part of the Warrior game plan, as 12 of their 16 points from the floor in the quarter came via jump shot. That is in stark contrast to what happened the last time these two teams met on February 24; that day, there were no three-pointers made by either team.

Shaw took control coming out of halftime with back to back layups that put the hosts back on top. From there, it was neck and neck as both programs tried to stave off their playoff demise. The Marauders played a lot more in transition in the third quarter, but neared no closer by the quarter's conclusion. Makiah Shaw carried their offense in the period, scoring 12 of 14 Millersville points.

Early in the fourth quarter and down 48-45, Millersville's leading scorer Shaw was taken out due to foul trouble. Sophie Elstone stepped up putting the Marauders in front with a three pointer and then a fast break layup. The fast break was caused by Brenna Ortwein, who created two easy buckets down the stretch of the fourth quarter. She jumped the passing lanes and got out on the fastbreak, the first of which was finished by Elstone and the second she took herself. Millersville did this four times in the final period, as Elstone and Ingram did the same thing.

The defensive runs put the Marauders up 54-50 with a minute remaining. On their next possession, Ingram pulled up from beyond the arc and hit a dagger three to go up seven and put the game away. That was her first three-pointer of the year after not making one all regular season. All told, they emerged with the 59-52 win.

GAME NOTES:
  • The Marauders grabbed their second victory in two weeks over the Warriors and push the all-time series to 60-34 in their favor. In playoff games, the Marauders now hold a 4-3 edge. It is the second year in a row that Millersville has defeated East Stroudsburg in the first round of the PSAC Playoff Tournament, as the Marauders emerged with a 72-65 victory on February 27, 2023.
  • With the victory, Millersville will go on to face No. 14 Lock Haven in Lock Haven on Wednesday, March 6 at 5:30 p.m. The Marauders fell 53-34 last Saturday in their last meeting.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Shaw was the Marauders' second leading scorer on the night with 14 points. She tallied 12 of those points in the third quarter alone. Ingram finished with 15 to pace the Marauders.
  • After neither team made a three-pointer in the February 24 matchup, they combined for five in this game.

HEAD COACH KIRA MOWEN'S POSTGAME REACTION:

  • On her feelings after her first PSAC playoff win: "It feels great, but I put it all on the girls. The team has been great this year in buying in, locking in and making the changes that they needed to make for this season. I'm a happy coach tonight, but I know that there's more work to be done based on the goals that we have for ourselves."
  • On being an underdog at Lock Haven: "Well, when you have a coach who's an underdog and has lived all of her life like that, they (the players) really form to me and take to me; so I don't mind that approach. I'd rather be picked last in the league and then show up and surprise everyone. So, we're happy. We're excited to get back there on Wednesday. We have a comfort level with playing there and maybe we have the rims go in our favor a little bit this time as well as just playing hard. We're not trying to end our season on Wednesday."
UP NEXT:
  • The Marauders head to the next round of the PSAC Playoff Tournament, where they will face Lock Haven at Lock Haven. That game is scheduled for Wednesday, March 6 at 5:30 p.m.
