Marauders' season ends at top seeded Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. — The Marauders were faced with a familiar foe standing between them and advancement in the PSAC Playoff Tournament. For the second time in five days, Millersville traveled to Lock Haven looking for an upset. The visitors fell behind early but battled back in the third quarter to come within two. A single digit lead in the fourth jumped to 14 by the games conclusion as the Marauders' season came to a close, 65-51.

The guests started slow, hitting just 16.7% of their shots in the first quarter. That led to an end-of-period advantage for the hosts of nine points, which they held into the half. The Bald Eagles' largest lead of the first half was 13, occurring just over a minute into the second period.

Morgan Mahoney was the most accurate Marauder in the first half, tallying eight points on four of six from the field. Millersville shot the ball much better in the second quarter but still entered the break down 20-30. Despite the offensive struggles, the visitor's defense kept them in the game. They forced 11 Bald Eagle turnovers and held the hosts to 33.3% from the field in the first 20 minutes.

The Marauders seemed to flip a switch in the third quarter, making inroads into the lead and eventually drawing within two with 40 seconds left. Jabria Ingram finding her shooting stroke was crucial, as she finished it with 11 points. She would finish the game strong, going seven of 13 in the latter 20 minutes. Mahoney cut it to two with an and one layup on a full court feed from Ingram. She had six points in the period and finished second on the team with 14. That three-point play made it 34-36 midway through the third.

After the Marauders brought the deficit to five entering the fourth quarter, the Bald Eagles responded with a run of their own. The host scored nine straight from the end of the third to the start of the fourth and brought their lead to double digits yet again. The Marauders did manage to bring it back to six with a Makiah Shaw layup with five minutes remaining, but neared no closer by the game's conclusion and fell 65-51.

GAME NOTES:
  • With this victory and its two previous wins this season, Lock Haven takes the upper hand in the all-time series, 41-40. It is the first time the Marauders have lost to the Bald Eagles in the playoffs, as they had taken the previous three matchups.
  • Millersville's season comes to a close much like it did last year: make the PSAC Playoff Tournament, win in round one over East Stroudsburg, then fall in the second round to the top seed in the division.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • In her final game as a Marauder, graduate student Ingram finished with a team-high 19 points. She also tallied two steals, three assists and six rebounds.
  • With the shooting percentages and turnover battle nearly even, the difference in the score could be found in each team's offensive rebound total. Millersville grabbed only 11 compared to Lock Haven's 21.

HEAD COACH KIRA MOWEN'S POSTGAME REACTION:

  • On what led to the third quarter run: "Desire, testament of their wills. They didn't want this to be the last time together. It's tough in a game of that magnitude to dig yourself out of a hole and have enough juice to finish. I thought the 3rd quarter comeback was everything that was needed to show our fire."
  • On the season as a whole: "Millersville is moving forward in a great direction. Some big pieces will graduate, but other pieces will be here next year. The important thing is we will return nine players that are ready to achieve excellence and bring this program back to where it was a few years ago. Thank you to the families and fans for tremendous support of these women; they deserve it. We will be excited to see you out next season and are appreciative of everything you do for us. Go 'Ville!"
