Millersville lacrosse can't snap Bloomsburg’s winning streak

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville lacrosse team fought hard in the first half but fell short of closing the gap in the second half as Bloomsburg emerged victorious, 15-7.

Rachel Keeney scored the first goal and gave Millersville their only lead of the game just under the 14th minute of play. Bloomsburg responded to the goal with four of their own as attacker, Tori Bruno, had a role in three of the four goals scored.

Trailing 4-1, Millersville rallied back with two unanswered. Keeney tallied her second goal of the day while Liv Genovese scored her first from a free position attempt and in a man-up situation, making it a low-scoring 4-3 score at the half.

Bloomsburg came out blazing in the third quarter, scoring five unanswered goals to go up 9-3. Shannon Meder broke the streak as she netted her free position shot in the seventh minute of play but Sophia Zelasko had the response for the Huskies. Millersville goalkeeper Morgan Scott took a late check to the head from the Huskies so KC O'Neill stepped up for the Marauders to make her debut in the fourth quarter.

Eight goals were scored in the last quarter with five coming from Bloomsburg. Ashlyn Simonetti netted a pair of goals while Kaleigh Funk added one more to Millersville's total. The second-half burst of energy led Bloomsburg to their sixth straight win on the season.

THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH KAITLYN HAFDELL
  • Thoughts on today's game: "We started strong, I just think our mistakes outweighed our skills and what we can show. We had some beautiful goals out of transition and shots from one one-on-ones. Unfortunately, Bloomsburg came out on top and we were outmatched with goals and their shot percentages."
  • Key takeaways: "We got better at seeing the off-ball movements, I think we can grow from that. That was an issue of staying spread out. Moving forward we just need to capitalize on the little things to be successful overall."
  • Elaborate on transition success: "I think this is our strength defensively and offensively. I think we can shut down a lot of clear opportunities for our opponents while capitalizing on a lot for ourselves. Us being able to have the numbers and being able to score off of this is nice."
  • Thoughts going into playing Shippensburg: "We need to learn from this game to be able to grow and execute in the future. We have a week to prepare so it is going to be a lot of focus on what we can do and enhance our strengths to produce more success."

  • Millersville travels to Shippensburg for a PSAC East game on March 30.
