Hard fought contest ends in favor of the Golden Rams

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — It was a battle of two streaking teams on Wednesday evening in Pucillo Gymnasium. The Marauders entered winners of four straight while the visiting Golden Rams brought a 13-game winning streak to Millersville. The night ended with the guests taking their fourteenth straight, 69-59.

The visitors took the early advantage with a 6-0 run but Jabria Ingram's layup a couple minutes in put the Marauders on the board. She would follow that up by snaking through and hitting a floater, eventually finishing the quarter with a team-high five points. After a physical first period, the Marauders trailed 11-13.

The 'Ville put together an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the game in the middle of the second quarter. That scoring outburst was fueled by a Jillian Crawford three-pointer and a Rhyan Mitchell and-one layup resulting in a 21-19 advantage. They held that lead into halftime with the score 25-23, which has generally been a good sign for Millersville; the Marauder's record was 8-2 when leading at half entering the contest.

The Marauder defense showed up for the fifth consecutive game, this time in the second quarter. They stifled the Golden Rams' offense to the tune of a 13.2% field goal mark from the floor. That defensive battle turned into an offensive one after the game's midway point, as the Golden Rams scored 22 points in the third quarter to nearly double up their first-half total. The visitors snagged a nine-point lead midway through the fourth and held that until the two minute mark when Ingram and Shaw took over. The duo scored 10 of the Marauders' final 12 points; Ingram had four and Shaw had six. Because of their efforts, the deficit was cut to two with a minute remaining. However, the Marauders couldn't climb any closer and fell 59-69.

Ingram, Shaw, and Sophie Elstone were the main sources of offense for the hosts in the second half and all three finished in double figures. Ingram led the way with 17, Shaw had 16 and Elstone tacked on 12.

GAME NOTES:
  • The Marauders' record all-time against the Golden Rams moves to 47-52. The Golden Rams have taken the last eight matchups and 20 of the last 22 dating back to the 2013-14 season.
  • The standings in the PSAC East are all set except for the sixth and final playoff spot. The first five competitors from the East (in seeding order) will be Lock Haven, West Chester, Kutztown, Millersville and Mansfield. East Stroudsburg and Bloomsburg are fighting for that last spot.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Ingram led the Marauders with nine rebounds and Brenna Ortwein followed her up with eight.
  • The Golden Rams were held to 28.5% from the field in the first half but broke out by making half of their attempts in the second.

HEAD COACH KIRA MOWEN'S POSTGAME REACTION:

  • Overall thoughts: "I think our girls did a tremendous job, coming off of the game that we had against East Stroudsburg on senior night and then getting back to work. We hung in there the whole game and that was the biggest test.  Last time we played at their place, we hung in for 18 minutes and then we folded. This time, we hung in there until they got us at the end."
  • On her team's fight at the end: "I think it says we're growing and I think it says that we might be growing at the right time. And in a coach's mind, I would hope that we're growing at the right time because we still have one game left before we open playoffs on Monday. So, let's have this carry over."
UP NEXT:
  • The Marauders' final game of the regular season will be at Lock Haven on March 2 at 1 p.m.
