Millersville wrestling ends regular season with the Battle for the Rupp Cup

ABOUT THE MATCH

  • Millersville wrestling, ranked No. 17 in Division II, will take to the mat against Franklin & Marshall on Friday in Pucillo Gymnasium. Coming into the dual, Franklin & Marshall had seven wrestlers place in the Messiah Open. Millersville is coming off of a 45-6 win over conference opponent Shippensburg. The Marauders were also present at the Messiah Open where three wrestlers placed.

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • Three Marauders are nationally ranked. Devin Flannery (133) is ranked No. 4 and Anthony Giampietro (184) is ranked No. 9.  Brandon Connor is ranked No. 3 in the 165-pound weight class but has been between 165-pounds and wrestling up in the 174-pound weight class.
  • 12 Marauders have winning records on the season with 10 Marauders having 10 plus wins on the season. Connor owns an 19-8 record with three falls, six technical falls, and two major decisions. Connor has placed first at the Glenville State Invitational along with second at the “Shorty” Hitchcock Classic. Not far behind is Giampietro who is 16-8 and has accumulated four falls, four technical falls, and five major decisions. Giampietro was the runner-up the Glenville State Invitational. Flannery boasts an 20-3 record followed with seven falls and seven technical falls. Flannery placed second at both the Glenville State Invitational and “Shorty” Hitchcock Open. Aidan Micheli and Jonathan Parilla are 2-0 in their last two matches. They both had critical takedowns with mere seconds left in the third period to gain necessary points for the Marauders.
  • Craig Cook holds a current 19-7 record along with six falls, four technical falls, and five major decisions. Cook took the first-place finish at the Glenville State Invitational. Cook is one of nine Marauders to achieve his 100th career win. His overall record stands at 101-38.
  • There could be a potential rematch between Cook and Bryce Kresho at 149-pounds. Cook emerged as victorious with a 6-2 decision win over Kresho.

SCOUTING THE DIPLOMATS

  • F&M has three ranked wrestlers on their roster at the Division I level. At 133 pounds, Mason Leopard is ranked No. 29 with a 22-9 record, totaling four falls, seven technical falls, and three major decisions. At 184 pounds James Conway is ranked No. 20 with a 24-7 record. Conway has two pins, six technical falls, and three major decisions. Ranked No. 31 is John Crawford at 197 pounds. Crawford is 18-9 complimented by three false, one technical fall, and two major decisions. Seven Diplomats have winning records
  • At the 59th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championship, the Diplomats earned 12th place out of 50 teams.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Millersville & Franklin and Marshall, long time opponents, have seen each other on the mat 31 times with Millersville holding the series advantage, 17-14. Within the last five meetings, F&M is 4-1 with a 29-12 win last season.
  • The Rupp Cup was named in honor of Dr. Theodore Rupp, who was an influential figure in the history of both wrestling programs. Rupp was a 1935 graduate of Franklin & Marshall, served in the Navy during World War II and upon his return from duty, he began teaching at Millersville and started the wrestling program. He led the program for 11 years, compiling a 71-18-2 record with two PSAC Championships. Rupp also coached Franklin & Marshall's program from 1936-43, leading 14 individuals to national titles.  He was a member of the inaugural Millersville Athletics Hall of Fame class in 1995, and was inducted into the F&M Hall of Fame in 1990.
