Women's Volleyball takes care of business against Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Millersville Marauders paid a visit to the Kutztown Golden Bears hoping to complete the season sweep after sweeping them in Millersville three weeks prior. With a 3-1 match victory, the guests did just that, handing the Golden Bears their eleventh straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) loss.

It looked as if it would be another Marauder sweep early on, as the visitors started the match by scoring four straight points. That quickly turned into a 12-4 lead on an Emma Kerwin service ace and they would go on to win the set 25-12. Kerwin was the high scorer in the set, tallying six of her game-high 17 kills in the frame.

The second game was much closer. Mya Cascario led it off for Millersville with one of her four total service aces to go up 1-0 but the Golden Bears stuck with them throughout. Kutztown took its first lead of the match at 3-2 but Millersville was able to rally back and keep the opposition at arms length until late in the set. It would take two Emma Ludwig kills to decide the game in favor of the Marauders, 25-23. That was part of her possibly most well-rounded match of the season; the senior setter contributed in all facets of the game, tallying eight kills, 32 assists, two service aces, eight digs and two total blocks without committing any sort of error.

The Golden Bears got one back in the third set with a 25-23 win but the Marauders shut the door on a possible comeback with a 25-14 thrashing in set four. Key to that victory was a pair of runs, the first of six straight points and the second a 6-1 flurry. The first run was fueled by five consecutive Kutztown attack errors with a Caroline Halsey kill to start. The second was a combination of Kerwin and Halsey offensively, who had four and two kills during that stretch, respectively.

GAME NOTES

  • The Marauders move into a tie for third place in the PSAC East with the victory. East Stroudsburg also possesses a 6-5 record, but Millersville won 3-0 over the Warriors earlier this season, giving Millersville the tiebreaker pending the outcome of tomorrow's clash. Bloomsburg falls a game back of both of both teams after falling to Shippensburg on Friday night.
  • The Marauders' record against the Golden Bears improves to 22-13 all-time with the win.

STATISTICAL INSIGHTS

  • Outside of Kerwin, the Marauders featured a balanced attack. Ludwig and Halsey finished in a tie for second on the team in kills with eight apiece. Halsey also added 7 block assists for 3.5 total blocks.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM MARAUDERS HEAD COACH BRIAN SMITH

  • Overall thoughts: "We passed well to start the match but had some uncharacteristically poor decision making to begin the second set–that kept Kutztown close and built their confidence. Our passing was poor in set three which led to a predictable office with fewer options which lead to hitting .000.  Despite that, we cleaned things up in set four.

UP NEXT:

  • The Marauders face possibly their most important match to date tomorrow, Nov. 9 at East Stroudsburg. That bout is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
