BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Millersville Marauders traveled to Bloomsburg to take on the Huskies in their second PSAC East match of the season. The hosts entered with a record of 3-10 but managed to grab a fourth victory at the expense of the Marauders Friday evening.
After allowing the Huskies to claim an early lead in the first set, Millersville took its first lead of the match with a
Taylor Welter kill to go up 4-3. It was Welter's first of a team-high nine kills that she finished the match with. The turning point of the set occurred after the Marauders went up 9-8 courtesy of
Kylee Schurig's putaway; Bloomsburg answered with a 6-1 run that would propel them to the 25-21 set victory. Millersville put up a fight, stringing together a 5-1 run of its own later in the set, but the deficit was too great at that point.
Â
The 'Ville was the beneficiary of a much better start in the second set, taking an 8-4 lead that would represent its largest advantage of the match. Like before, the hosts would knot the score up a few rallies later and the game was neck-and-neck after that. Millersville found itself down 24-21 late in the set and used another Schurig kill as well as a Husky error to cut the lead to one. However, the hosts won the next point and took the two-game lead. Bloomsburg also won set three after a fast start turned into an insurmountable lead for the Huskies.
POSTGAME REACTION FROM BRIAN SMITH:Â
- On the match: The match started fine; both teams traded off points in set one until it was tied 10-10. Then we had a string of poor passes and couldn't run our offense. Those struggles followed us into sets two and three as well.Â
- On the receiving differential: "We are always trying to win the passing and serving portions of the game and we didn't do that. We committed nine zero passes to their one. Bloomsburg played excellent defense all match and dug a lot of our shots. We didn't come close to getting the number of kills we want to average."
- On the team's recent struggles: "We are at a crossroads right now in our season. We can't keep doing the same thing and expect different results; I expect changes will happen this week at practice. Our job is to represent our university, not ourselves, and we will continue to work toward that end."
