ABOUT THE GAME

  • The Millersville Marauders (4-8, 2-4) travel to face the Shippensburg Raiders (2-11, 1-6) on Wednesday evening. It will be the Marauders’ first game against a PSAC East foe this season and comes after a comfortable win over Seton Hill on Jan. 3. They snapped a three-game losing streak with that victory and moved into sole possession of fourth place in the PSAC East. Shippensburg is currently tied with Shepherd for eighth place at the bottom of the standings.

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • Millersville is coming off of its best win of the season, a 67-56 takedown of the Griffins from Seton Hill. The Marauder defense was crucial to the victory. They held the Griffins to just 56 points, more than 22 less than their PSAC-best 78.6 points per game coming in.
  • Millersville has faced an exceptionally tough schedule to this point, especially of late. The combined conference record of the last four teams they have played (Edinboro, Mercyhurst, Gannon and Seton Hill) is 24-4, an .857 winning percentage.
  • The Marauders have begun to establish their offensive identity, which has been based around the pick and roll chemistry of their guards and bigs. Jabria Ingram was inserted into the starting lineup for the first time this season against Gannon on Dec. 30. Since then, the graduate student has tallied 16 assists over two games including a career-high 13 against Seton Hill. She also set a career-best in points with 17.
  • La'Shyra Williams also broke out against the Griffins, pouring in a season-high 19 points on 9/13 from the floor. With that, she raised her points per game into double-digits at 10.1 and improved her team-best shooting percentage of 60.5%. The redshirt senior has also made her mark defensively this season, as she's second on the 'Ville in both steals and blocks.
  • With the exception of a scoreless outing against Mercyhurst, Sophie Elstone’s reached double-figures in four of the last six games. She’s also led the team in scoring in three of those contests. The reason for this is her shooting, as she's hit on 67% of her three-point attempts in this timespan.
  • Makiah Shaw has been the team's leading scorer all year (11.7 PPG) and is one of two Marauders to start every game (Brenna Ortwein being the other). Ortwein's presence defensively has been a game-changer all-season for Millersville.  She's tops on the team in rebounding (5.6 per game) and steals (1.7 per contest). She pulled down eight boards last time out with half of them coming on the offensive end.

SCOUTING THE RAIDERS

  • Shippensburg broke a seven-game losing streak against Bloomsburg its last time out with a 71-65 victory in Bloomsburg. It was a back-and-forth contest throughout, as the Raiders entered the fourth quarter down one and managed to pull it out. Prior to that victory they hadn't won since Nov. 21 against Goldey-Beacom.
  • Being south of the .500 mark is unfamiliar territory for Head Coach Kristy Trn, as she's compiled a 405-269 record over her 25 seasons leading the Raiders. She's the winningest coach in Shippensburg Women's Basketball history and has five PSAC Divisional Coach of the Year awards to her name.
  • These offenses should be fairly evenly matched, as the Marauders come in 15th in the PSAC in points per game with the Raiders right behind them at 16th. A contributing factor to that Raider mark is that they are last in the PSAC in both assists and steals per game.
  • That offense is led by Graduate Student Treasure George, who's tops on the team in scoring at 14.2 points per game. She put up a season-best 23 points against Bloomsburg. George has topped 20 points four times this season and has reached double-figures in her last seven contests.
  • Two members of the Raiders have started all 13 games so far; Taja Colbert and Bella Chimienti. Colbert is second on the team in points (9.8), assists (2.2) and steals per game (1.1). Chimienti, a freshman, is tops on the squad in minutes per game (35.6) and put up a career-high 17 points her last time out.

SERIES HISTORY

  • 2024 marks year number 102 in this rivalry, by far the oldest in the Millersville Women's Basketball record books. The teams first clashed in a the 1921-22 season, with that first matchup being a 14-15 loss. Aside from a more than two decade stretch between the 1945-46 and 1968-69 seasons in which Shippensburg won 17 of 18 games, it has been an evenly matched rivalry with an all-time record of 49-55 in the Raiders' favor.
  • Shippensburg has held the upper hand of late, however, as they've taken five of the last six matchups dating back to Jan. 3, 2020.
